Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

I have never heard of California Whites.
To make my life easier, I am so tempted to build Sesame her own little coop. I need to be patient though. Sign. Chicken business is hard.
Lemondrop was hard on that Crele Orpington and now that white Cochin Cockerel was being hard on her today. Weird. That Crele looks like a Ostrich with those legs. Very funny looking.

I found California Whites to be WAY nicer then regular leghorns and just as good or better at laying.

Mine were friendly, calm and low to middle ranking. Even in a flock with bantams they behaved. I have one now but she is a mess. She was in my rescues and due to poor nutrition is already done laying at just 2 years old. She is still nice so gets a free ride.
I plan to get more someday.

I have a few bossy leghorn crosses and I can hardly wait to remove them from the flock. But they are still pretty good layers and are only 16 months old. I'm thinking of making them dog food when they start molting next fall. Are the colored leghorns, browns and Isabella for example, any better tempered than production white leghorns?

I have heard mixed reviews on the browns. I hear they are nicer but stink at laying.

I like how the Isabella roosters look BUT the pics of the hens look rather plain. I don't know anyone that has them so not any info on behavior.

If you don't mind skittish but not aggressive Blue Andalusian are good layers. They don't care to be handled but mine didn't run away screaming bloody murder either. Mine also still laid well at 5 years old.

You know..... Some chickens just never "fit" in certain groups.

I have had a few like that. Mine were always the horridly mean ones though. You know, the hair pullers on the playground.

In the long run you may have to keep poor little bucket head in a separate set up with mellow birds and no rooster.

It sux but it may be best for her.

That might be the option. I will give it a week and if it doesn't change then I will put her with the other flock they are a lot better with new comers. The rooster of that flock is patient. I was just hoping to breed her with the Ameraucana rooster

Very true... that's why our leghorns are going to freezer camp soon.... 2 of them are just out and out assholes.... I think I MAY keep Eliza...... she never seems to be the cause of any troubles..... but Purple Thunder and Brain need to go!!!

My brown leghorn is really sweet and but she is also the lowest on the totam poll well except for the three bantams. She lays 4 to 5 days a week

I went to clean up the coop tonight and feed my chickens and I must say I am completely in love with the PDZ stuff and I wish that I had had it in the coop from the very beginning. And as I was cleaning up stuff I discovered a huge wet spot in Odin's area where his water had spilled so I sprinkled some of the PTZ underneath his straw. I have to get another bag and I'm going to put some of it on the entire floor. Before and after pics.. it's so much better than picking poop out of straw. This is seriously changed my life.

I love PDZ too. It's magical.
It's like the stuff the school janitor used to come and dump on a pile of throwup when somebody puked in the classroom!

*Make sure you buy the bag with the horse on it. They package the same stuff in a smaller bag "for chickens" now at the same price.
I hate it when companies do that crap.
When I get it home I pour it into big kitty litter jugs and put them in a deck box which is right next to my coop/run. It's where I keep all my supplies.
I live where it's humid almost all the time. I think it protects it from absorbing moisture.
Then I made a "flinger" out of the top half of a milk bottle.
After a total cleanout I fling a light dusting of it on the vinyl floor of the coop.
I don't exactly have poop boards because my coop isn't that big but I have three greenhouse trays I ordered online that fit exactly right on the floor of the coop right up to the edge of the nesting area.
I sprinkle pdz on them, then the shavings go on top. I love how it makes cleaning a breeze. I can pop on a glove and just pick the poopy piles right up. Poop literally never sticks to anything!

I had a kitty litter scoop that broke (flimsy POC). I had this (pic below) colander spoon in my kitchen drawer. I picked up at an outlet store somewhere and it is PERFECT for scooping poop! It is very sturdy and durable! The chicken poop always fell out between the kitty scoop slots too.
