Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

Maybe you already told us, but what kinds of birds do you have? How many?

I have 4 birds, 2 are parakeets (keets) and the other 2 are hens.

Gurtrude is our first chicken, and she walked in to or garage soaking wet in Oct 2016. It took us 10 mins to catch her, and she hasn't regretted a minute since. She is an Easter Egger.

Lizbeth is our youngster, only 9 mos old, and a banty gold laced cochin. She shares the kitchen with Gurtrude, but they have their own pens right next to each other because Gurtrude likes grabbing Lizbeth's comb, so we want Lizbeth to have her own safe space. Gurtrude is also a small standard hen, so Lizbeth is only 2/3rds her size.

They are both good layers, so we get the equivalent of 9 eggs per week (Lizbeth's are half size). Surprisingly, it's not that expensive to keep them. We get the large bags of feed and keep it in an airtight container, and they get crickets and superworms daily, so about 2000 bugs each month for just under $80/month. Fresh fruits and veggies are pretty easy too, just get one or two of whatever, stick it on a skewer and set it up through the wire in the corner of their pens and they're happy little things.

I'm glad Gurtrude found us, she showed me how empty our menagerie was without chickens.

Gurtrude the night she found us.

New is hard to get used to!
You should have told us and we wouldn't have teased you about not being around.
I'm sorry.
I'm also so happy for you.
Awwww. good kids too.
You've taught them well obviously.

I'm not fussed about the teasing, y'all are good people. Yes, I am around, just relatively quiet because my poultry niche is more unusual, so I don't have similar experiences for chiming in on a lot of stuff. When things are similar enough, I toss my 2 pence in for consideration. Same goes with the cooking and whatnot. I actually do take the time to read each post, no matter how many pages have accrued since my last visit. Today was 18 pages, lol, but well worth it. I'm learning something from y'all every day.

Awe! I love your flock!! I am just amazed how many people just find chickens. Wow!

It has been proven that chickens are smart, couldn’t they be litter box trained???

I took a Zanaflex (short acting mucle relaxer) last night and I could slowly feel my muscles relaxing. Heaven! Numbness and tingling went away. I start waking up about 4:30 with numbess coming back. I slept in the recliner with my heated throw.
Bugling discs and arthritis in my neck. Bursitis in left hip. Right hip was replaced a couple years ago.

A little chilly in the house (even for me), I forgot I thurned the heat off. Only 63 degrees.

Hubby comes home today! We pick him up at 1:15. I still have work to do on my run, but it is done for the most part. My body and mind have drastically slowed down the past couple of days.

You can just chime in with what you have going on that day, kind of like dear diary.

Maddie, the old dog I took in, has a severe limp. I noticed her leg was turned funny, I assumed it was arthritis, but now she has a limp. I don’t feel anything in her paw and I don’t want to prod too much on her arm. Please don’t judge me, but I don’t want to take her in to run up an expensive vet bill! Her heart medication is $80 plus Heartguard and Nexguard!!! She is still jumping off and on the couch though. I guess I will watch her and see how she does this weekend.

Your hens eat better than my Grey! Maybe you could call them "ground parrots"! lol

I'd wait as well. Most likely could be a sprain... if she doesn't seem to be in pain or is whimpering, wait it out for a day or 2.

Finally went back to sleep around 3. Back up at 430... and then back up, permanently, at 6. In bed, lower back on a heating pad, a compression sock and pain relief cream on both feet.... I am wearing my poor left leg out with all the babying I'm doing for the right!

When I feed the chickies this morning, I'll get new pics of the Brat Pack. They are looking 100x better, IMO. Assless' butt is looking a lot better as well. She keeps wanting to get into the pen with the rest of her flock, but her bum isn't nearly healed enough to get back in there. We did get some blue kote... so we may use that and then return her to her coop mates.

So, currently staying snuggled up in bed, watching DH get ready for a 1/2 day of work. Ahhh, sometimes working from home is AWESOME! :lau
