OK I know this may sound silly but I am wanting a mix of my 2 favorite birds cochinX NN is it possible to get cochin leg feathering and NN? I am immpatiently waiting on more of the broody chicks to hatch hopefully find out myself right noe though all my turkens are in the mixed layer flock with cochin and NN roos. have gotten 2 NN so far and 1 has to be NN hen and cochin roo and they other BO hen and NN roo. No on the leg feathering so far with the one cochin mixed and I know it was the cochin due to color.

Also I have heard them refered to as NN or Turken what is the politically correct term?

You are just teasing, right? You do know that we don't live in igloos, have running water (in most areas), working bathrooms, high speed internet, and the mail is delivered in trucks, not by sled-dogs... right?

I don't think my coop(s) qualify as an igloo... not by a long shot! LOL!

Yes I was teasing.. The nest boxes ARE mini-igloos though, right? RIGHT??

(btw I have an aunt in Anchorage)

Not every Californian has high speed internet.. (grumble, grumble) I can't believe it seems everybody else has broadband access except for me?! Sigh.

Nothing is too silly. I have mixed naked necks with various breeds in the past(Polish, frizzles, silkies, etc).

What you want is absolutely possible and rather easy also.. the naked neck has no effect on leg feathering in any way(so a naked necked bird can have the fullest leg feathering, that is). Both the naked neck and leg feathering is dominant.. however leg feathering also has a dose effect- which means expect "less" leg feathering in the cross. Like maybe feathers down the side of leg almost to the toes.. however this can vary quite wildly, there could be the one chick with leg feathers all way down to toes..

It's easiest to accomplish by crossing a NN and cochin and then breeding the crosses back to a pure cochin to improve on the leg feathering and you should have a few chicks who have full leg feathering plus the naked neck.

Be sure to take pictures! I for one would love to see this!

Whoops, forgot to answer your other question.. Naked Neck is considered the correct name.. Turken is a slang term, coined by people who either thought they looked like a turkey/chicken cross or actually were one lol. In some countries the official name is Transylvanian Naked Neck.

I knew it. You'd be surprised at how many people still have those misconceptions, though. Someone asked me about where I shopped, and when I mentioned we had a Nordstroms she about pee'd her pants!! LOL! Nope, no mini-igloos here. Sorry.

Shatter my beliefs like shards of ice willya?!

I understand Canadians get a lot of the same misconceptions..

At an university(in so. Calif), I knew this guy who came from New York with ONLY his undies, T-shirts, shorts and one pant(for 'partyin at night')... because he thought it was 'always sunny and warm' out here.. LOL A lot of people simply refuse to come out here due to fear of quakes plus don't you know Calif is gonna fall into the sea....
