anyone have quechua? or know much about them?

It is a breed of chicken from South America. It is one of the breeds that was used to create the more popular Aracauna and Ameraucana.

is that you Kim-the-vet?

yes, shes right, and thats about all I know, they are on feathersite.com

I have questions about ideas for breeding projects, I only have a pair and I was wondering what to breed with (more easily obtained) where I can get enough unrelated to start to breed back and breed out the cross after time

I have a red jungle fowl hen, but I have heard that there can be fertility problems breeding those with chickens.

any info anyone can provide would be a help!

I don't know too much about them. Probably much less than you. I just remember being interested in them while researching the Ameraucanas and Araucanas. That's very interesting that you have a pair of them.

What if you were to breed them to their descendants? Like an Ameraucana or Araucana and then just breed them back the the Quechua?

I'm doing something similar with my Java to revive a particular color that went exstinct a while back.

Sorry I couldn't help much more than that.

This is the same Kim from NC Poultry East and NC Poultry2. I'm going to school to be a vet, not one yet. Didn't quite know what you meant by Kim-the-vet. LOL My user name for the yahoo groups is equineloverkim, if that helps.

Kim, I know who you are!! just teasing about the vet, I have said something similar when asking about alpacas, remember!

I do plan to breed back with the offspring. I was also going to try a few things.....

LOL. I remember that whole deal about the alpacas now. LOL

When I said descendants, I was talking about the descendants of the breed as a whole. For example with my Java. The Java are quite rare so it's hard to find "new blood". Well I was thinking about what I could use, I remember reading that the Java was used in created a ton of other breeds. I went down the list of breeds that descended from the Java and picked the one that still closely resembled the original Java. I breed in the new blood from the descending breed and then by my F3 generation, you can't tell what I have done. It's what I was suggesting with your Quechua.

Find all the breeds descending from the Quechua, find which one closest resembles the original Quechuas and go with those. I know that the Ameraucana and Araucana came from the Quechua, were there any other breeds the were created using the Quechua. Look at pictures of all the breeds that came from the Quechua then get you some that most closely resemble the Quechua(even if they poorly represent the breed that they are) and go for it, always breeding back towards your original pair.

I'll do some research on the Quechua tonight and see what I can come up with. I should post back later tonight.
