Anyone have "surprise" breed (a chicken they thought was one breed, turned out to be another)?

I had all brown and green/blue egg layers last year, and I had heard how obnoxious White leghorns could be, so I was for some unknown reason drawn to them at the TSC this spring. I got two to go with my barred rock girls. As they grew, I've been so surprised how friendly and tame. One even learned to ride on my arm as I chicken "chored" the grow out pen. Why, I didn't see what the big deal was, these were friendly leghorns.

Then, I had a friend come over, more chicken experience than I. She thinks they are white rocks. Silly TSC, I am not mad, but wondered why their face turned red early with the other barred rocks and I hadn't seen a white egg yet!

Anyone else get a "surprise chicken breed"?

Yep my Jersey Giant hen has turned out to be an Australorp Hen but I love her just the same and she came from TSC too.

This is Big Sister. She was supposed to be a Jersey Giant, but she does not have yellow on the bottom of her feet, and has the tiniest comb and wattles. She does lay a lovely brown egg, and is very easy to handle.

Well, I think my chickens are all what they claim to be. I am still confused however how I have two white chicks that I hatched here from a black australorp hen and a barred rock rooster. They were yellow when newly hatched and are now all white. One has tiny black speck on wing. They are about 10 weeks old now. Can color still appear? I expected black chicks since mom and dad both were....

I've gotten an EE that was supposed to be an araucana, but I'm sure that's happened to a lot of people....

Yup. The "Welsummer" chick I bought at IFA this year turned out to be a RIR. Newbie me, I didn't know the difference in colors at the time. I kept thinking her color would change as she got older. Ah well, I love her to pieces, and I'm just happy to have chickens. Just wish I hadn't paid twice as much for a RIR..........

Lesler5 I wish I could answer how you chicks came to be the way they are. Interesting.

Thanks guys, my white rock formerly known as white leghorn was picking on my toes just a few minutes ago. I am just glad as well to have chickens. I wanted a mixed flock to be eye catching, and I have been successful with that, quite a mix and I love it!

I love my mixed flock too, and maybe some of the Ameracaunas are EE's (no green legs though) and I have thw two mysteriously white home breds, but they do lok nice roaming the back yard

I got my original 5 and they were all supposed to be Barred Rocks. One was white so maybe a white Rock but I think she's a Leghorn. One BR is probably a BR but the other is probably a Dominique.
