A few weeks ago I found one of my brown leghorns in the hen house sitting in a nest box...I didn't think much of it and got the eggs and went on my way. I don't normally keep a real accurate count on the hens, just because it is nearly impossible. We have around 30. So I didn't miss one brown leghorn. This morning while doing chores I hear a PEEP! PEEP!

and thought what in the world?!? (all the chicks we have in brooders are past the peep stage) So I get to looking around and there is a BROWN LEGHORN and baby chick off to the side of the yard. The hen was attacking our tom cat who had gotten too close...

I know leghorns are a commercial breed and it just really surprised me to see that she had secretly hatched out a chick.

That is funny! What a surprise. I have a couple brown leg horns and I think one would go broody if I let her she likes to sit on eggs A LOT but I take them away.
