I just love you! And thanks again for your comments about my little leghorn roo with the botulism. He has recovered very well and has a bit of a crush on my partridge rock.

A friend's 14 year-old son came by to see my chickens and asked, "do they sleep upside-down?". Seriously, I thought? What do kids think-- eggs grow on trees?

That's so funny!
At least where I grew up (the city) we had a farm.
It was a pretty cramped farm but a farm nonetheless.

And good for you! I was surprised to learn that even a rooster or two were legal in LA. There are increasingly more farmers markets in individual cities who bring in local producers. Several neighborhoods pool to buy or rent a communal garden space, some even run by donations for schools. I think even a hen and a tomato plant on the roof is a good start.

I agree that if you can't bring the farm to you, take your kids to the farm!!

It's essential for their understanding of how things work, and for them to make educated decisions for their own eventual families. Take 'em to the bank, too-- too many don't get money either.

Ah young love. Maybe they'll give you cute little babies in the spring.

I don't enjoy eating store bought eggs, but if I'm at someones house and they are serving eggs then I'll eat them. They aren't poisonous or anything.

One of the reasons I wanted chickens was to avoid buying eggs from chickens raised in those conditions. It's terrible. No living creature should have to live that way. And last summer there was a big salmonella outbreak in eggs produced around here because of the filthy, crowded conditions.

Just sickening. So, when I do have to buy eggs I fork out the money for cage-free, although I know their conditions aren't really that great, either. Thankfully we are producing plenty of eggs now.

Very well said!
It is so sad to hear about the poverty that is prevalent in other parts of the world. It seems like such an enormous problem

I think the trend/fad now has a new name for it, it's called urban farming and it consist of one hatchery rescue hen on the roof of your apartment building with one Organic cherry tomato plant in a 5 gal bucket. and they will soon take over the world,

I just feel sorry for the poor hen, only a plant to keep it company.

No, the farm was a fair bit larger than that. They had sheep, goats and I think a donkey. Oh, and if the weather was good, they'd bring the pigs out for public display.

There were two farms in my city. It was a pretty big city too, so that was surprising.

My parents tell me stories about taking me every weekend when I was a little kid... they say I'd chase all the chickens and ducks and try to grab hold of the four-legged creatures who couldn't run as fast.
