Five years ago we decided to embark on the crazy adventure of chicken ownership. We started off with three chickens, "The Girls". In 2013 we got three SLW'Ss ("The Babies"), bringing our total to six. We went another year with our six chickens, until a raccoon family got to three of them.We were left with three chickens, one of the original girls (a Barred Rock named Juliette), and two of the babies. In the spring of 2015, we committed to buying 7 more chickens ("The Chickies" (all affectionately and individually named)), which required us to build a bigger coop. We had a great season with them-- but our coop seemed a little too big for the amount of chickens we now had (10). Somehow we have now committed to SIX more chickens, which will bring our total count to 16 chickens. This has been a prime example of chicken math. The oldest Matriarch, Juliette, reigns over her little flock.

Now that you know our story, here is the packing list due to ship May 9th from Meyer hatchery:

We have been prepping for chickens for over a year. The coop is ready. The brooder is done and we have the flexibility to make small adjustments as we get to know "The Ladies". Hours of research to select breeds that that match our goals and family life. My kids have been taught proper chick handling, chicken care and responsibilities and been prepped with potential survival rates. And, the chicks have been ordered! So we wait... but, we only have to wait a week. Our chicks are shipped tomorrow, Feb 17th!

To Barredcomet & Blooie, yes, I intend to use Mama Heating Pad once again. Last year was my first year with Chicks. I brooded approximately 27 chicks and only lost one. I'm also doing as someone in this thread just mentioned - last year were my docile laying stock. This year, I want some pretty eggs to add to my basket and some pretty hens in the yard. I'm afraid I may have ordered my limit on what my coop will healthily handle. Now, I guess I better hope that none of my hens decide they want to become mothers.

Me too! First post; hi everyone. I am waiting on 12 Lavender Cuckoo Orpingtons, due to hatch Feb 23. I went with a small local breeder so I get to pick my babies up and drive them home!
My first choice was Barred Rocks but she had a long waiting list for those and her Rock hens aren't laying much right now. It is our first foray into chicken keeping and we are super excited. I have a 5 yr old daughter who is going to be a dedicated little egg collector.

I am waiting with great excitement for my chicks (hatch date April 4th), haven't had chickens in 15years, so I am very excited to finally have a place again where I can have them.

Anyone have the super blue egg layers from My Pet Chicken? I was kinda curious and also wanted to make sure I actually got eggs so was excited to add them on to my order. First time ordering from MPC as well, I had only used McMurray before. Little worried about them having to get shipped all the way to Oregon, but hoping April will be a kinder month for shipping!
