Anyone know how to judge amoxicillin dose for a five pound Brahma hen?

There is a Marek's blood test available and I think @seminolewind and/or @Nambroth have more info on that.

I don't know what is available in Australia, maybe check with an Ag college? I'm darn sure they have good livestock vets but don't know how many poultry specialists they have.
And, the cost can vary tremendously. I'm in Indiana. I can schedule with the Purdue Poultry Program and the professor will haul the students here, examine all of my birds, inspect my barn, diagnose problems and recommend best practices for free.
Dr. Peacock cost 40$ for an office visit,20$ for a recheck,3.95$ for antibiotics and the Mareck's test was included in the first visit.
On the other hand, Purdue charges 150$ for a necropsy plus 15$-30$ per bacterial /viral test.
It is infinitely more cost effective to treat a bird than have a necropsy done.(not to mention, my birds are pretty much pets with benefits) Lora

Whilst awaiting my post being approved due to an external link.
10mg per kilo per day. If severe 20mg per kilo for three days then 10mg per kilo for the next four to seven days.

Now the difficulty is whether to treat all your birds or just the one showing symptoms. Easy if you only have a few. But if you have many I advise water dosing.

As I have read above, turning green to brown. The issue surrounding an antibiotic is that it can have the effect of wiping out natural and essential gut flora.
Follow the course, then just be patient. I suppose you could include pre probiotic yogurts, brewers yeasts and yeast extract to kick start the process. Definitely harmless so worth a try. :)

That to me is scary Kathy. That is equivalent to giving a human of 75 kilograms proportionate to a chook of 3 kilograms 62.5 grams per day. Obviously absorption should be allowed for and that is a very big chook and a low mass human being. (I am a physicist)
This for me is the cause of superbugs. It filters down the food chain and thus immunoresistance is apparent.

Quite shocked tbh, infact I'm blown away. A 2kilogram bird on 500 mg per day. More closely 32.5 x human dosage. ***? Then include absorption..... Seriously?

Maximum typical human dosage is 1 gram per day. 1.5 absolute max.

I would cull the Vet not the chook.....

!!!!!!!! If Possible Shoot Your Veterinarian !!!!!!!!

Chickens often get way more per kg that other animals and people.

Yes it may be given more but is it justified? Human maximum absorption is 49%. Average 39%. Chook average estimate is in the order of 63% +/- 4.58 %
This suggests the chicken more readily absorbs amoxicillin in blood plasma than the human. So we are looking at over 50x human dosage....

Thank you for the welcome. Only I am an old hand. Lost email/ password.

Are you a Vet by chance?
Not a vet, but do know for a fact that the effective fenbendazole dose in cows is 5mg/kg *once* and 10-50mg/kg in chickens for *several* days.
