Anyone know if raccoons scream?

Sounds like a cougar to me. Mark on the calendar the date you first heard it. Then mark the next time you hear it. They travel in a circuit of their territory. This will give you an idea of when the creature will be returning to your area.

That way, you can take extra precautions.

I'm not sure what kind of owl we have around here, but they sound like a banshee with their high pitched screach... freaks me out.

Just so you all know, I just listened to that link that is supposed to be a coon sound. That is nothing like what we heard the day the coon was hanging from my dog's neck. Not even close.

We had coons living in our attick and the audio file sounded more like coons when they are talking / playing with each other.

I do not know about the screach but if a coon gets a chicken they normaly get what they want and leave the rest. The chicken does more holiering than the coon.

just a comment on the raccoon screaming....

on one very snowy night on suburban long island, we heard what we thought was a cougar! my ex- bro in law (being the "manly man" cop type) decides to go investigate... with his handgun. being not so bright myself sometimes and way too bold, i followed. we get to the neighbors shed where the screaming is coming from.... i stand to side slowly open the door (nearly peeing in my pants) as he gets ready to shoot what ever it is ....
but it is only one ticked off raccoon, who takes off like a shot after screaming some more at us. we laughed our selves silly. but it was an awful sound. he grew up in rural pennsylvania and had never heard one make that noise, we think it was the acoustics of the shed!

Panthers and cougars scream like a women. In our neck of the woods if it sounds like a women screaming in fright...it usually means a panther or cougar. Someone mentioned a rabbit also. They will make a high pitched squeal when hurt ...not as scary as the other. Good luck finding out what caused it.
