Anyone listen to National Public Radio?

I listen to pandora.com at work and NPR in the car.

Do you ever hear Rick Steves on NPR? I met him in Jan and he's got the WORST sense of direction, I swear. I was helping him carry some things back to his car, which he couldn't find. We schlepped boxes of books through 3 levels of a parking garage. I finally turned to him & said, "Gee, I hope you're better with maps that parking garages."

I've tried listening to Neal Boortz and enjoy parts of it. The biggest reason I don't is the amount of commercials durring the broadcast. It's 3 minutes of Neal 5 minutes of commercials then repeat. I love NPR's 3 second station identification breaks then right back to the story.

Indeed! He was showing it at the uni where I work - public screening w/ RS himself. He followed it up with Q&A session. I helped organize the event, so had a chance to meet him.

Meh.

With a mic in his hand, he's VERY charming and funny. Without one, he's VERY aloof and almost dismissive. I think it's b/c he's used to rabid fans foaming at the mouth over him. I don't personally care - he's just an average-looking, middle-aged guy who has travelled a lot in Europe to me.

When it's your job to be charming and engaging, I can see running out of steam when you're Off duty. I sure would.

True, but I think it had more to do with the people clawing to get a piece of him. I was in class last year with Edgar Martinez, the former Mariner. He's a super nice guy but has that same stand-offish quality.

Honestly, I think it's not a snobbery thing, just a self-protection thing. It took Edgar a while to open up to the class and realize that once the shine wore off for us and we stopped whispering, "OMG that's Edgar Martinez!", he was just another guy in the class. That's when he was able to feel like he was accepted b/c he's Edgar, not because he was Edgar Martinez.
