Anyone living off the land?

Peppers usually do well in pots. Beets believe it or not do better with a little sand mixed into their soil. Sun flowers doesn't take up much space. I would start them in a small pot and transplant them into the ground when they are small. Give them lots of water after u transplant them to bring them out of the shock and keep plenty of dirt around their roots when transplanting.. Beans spread out, I would put them in the ground. I would put the lettuce in the ground also.

Okay I can plant the peppers in the pot that I just transferred the tomatoes out of. I have plenty of sand for the beets LOL! Sunflowers in pot-ummm I wont have any more if I put the peppers in the pot. Can I just put them straight in to the ground? So wait-basically everything I bought needs to be in the ground and not in a raised bed? Well I am going to try the beans and lettuce and beets in the raised bed to see if it will work. or the peppers and beets and lettuce and do the beans in the ground. IDK I guess it is a good thing I didn't do them yet because I was going out in the next hour to do them.

Yeah I would keep a male and save that female to try and get something out of them. That way you get more and can continur the cycle-and get duck eggs too!!!

I 'm sorry I ment your raised beds ground. The sun flowers can be started in old egg cartons or like mac and cheese boxes. Just little small home made pots will work and set something under them to catch the water drainage. Poke holes for your drainage in the bottom of the containers u use. Set them in a sunny window an wait till they sprout. I would only plant them about a fourth to half inch deep and cover and water.

I saw someone using milk cartons, with one of the long sides cut off to nearly the corner. and they put the potting mix in it with the seeds.

Has anybody raised carrots? On an impulse I purchased a 6-pack of baby carrot plants at the local farm patch. I probably should have just tried seeds, but I figured if these are productive I'll plant seeds the next time around. Anyhow I would be interested in hearing from others regarding home grown carrots.

Yes this sounds like my egg carton ideal. This is a cheap and easy way to get plants started in doors.
As far as carrots go they like to grow in loose deep and kind of sandy soil. If you don't have sand u need to add it. It makes them grow deeper and get bigger and easy to pull up. I hope this helps a little.

Thank you. We have raised beds, and can easily incorporate some sand. We eat lots of carrots, and even though they're cheap, it will be fun if we can grow our own.

Went out into the drizzle this morning and harvested our first batch of chard, collards and green beans (contenders). We're getting eggplants again from our plants that survived the long hot summer. We just about at the point where we don't have to buy fresh produce, except for onions, potatoes and garlic. I love this time of year!
