Anyone living off the land?

Thank you.  We have raised beds, and can easily incorporate some sand.  We eat lots of carrots, and even though they're cheap, it will be fun if we can grow our own.

I've grown carrots quite a bit in Houston. They really need planting in october from seed but the do very well if you have loose soil that doesn't flood. The roots aren't always as long as you expect but they do grow well in your area I'm sure.

Went out into the drizzle this morning and harvested our first batch of chard, collards and green beans (contenders). We're getting eggplants again from our plants that survived the long hot summer. We just about at the point where we don't have to buy fresh produce, except for onions, potatoes and garlic. I love this time of year!

YAY I want to get to that point-and I will someday.

When to plant depends largely on your climate zone, and the weather conditions this season. I'm always ready to give something a try, and in this case you don't have much to lose except maybe a few seeds or small plants. Good luck.

YAY I want to get to that point-and I will someday.

It's taken us several years to gradually expand our vegetable gardens, and it's easier now that we're both retired. Now our friends head the other way when they see us coming with bags of greens to give away.

I just planted romaine lettuce, beets and bell peppers. I will try more in spring if I do good this time.
Anyone know how to make beet root juice the easy way?

I'm with Teri - go ahead! for where I live its a few weeks late to plant them but I bet you'd do fine.

yay! Carrots it is. BTW how often am I supposed to water the new seeds of these plants? I am afraid I will wash them away. I noticed that some of the beet seeds washed around when I watered them when I put them in the ground.


Oh BTW has anyone ever skinned a rabbit for food and saved the fur? I am curious about the experience. Was it hard? Did it require special tools? Ect.

With the recent rains and cooler weather, you shouldn't have to water much. I suggest you give them a gentle watering when you plant the seeds, and then check daily for several days to see if the soil is drying out. You may want to water gently every day or two for a week, until the plants start putting down roots. After that you can judge from the amount of rain we get. If there's no rain you may want to water gently once a week. I understand that carrots like good drainage, as they don't want to get too wet.
