Anyone nervous about Bird Flu?

I just wish there was better screening of passengers flying out of China....When a disease like this appears, our borders should be immediately closed to passengers flying in from China until WHO gives the "all clear".  Because once there is an infected person here then all Hell can break loose.

You are exactly right. Should the country be in a panic about a strain of flu that hasn't even reached us? Certainly not. However, precautions should be in place to help ensure that it doesn't spend here.

I think you really need to do some research on how many people were killed or extremely ill from H1N1 and SARS before you call them a hoax. If you truly consider H1N1 a hoax then I think you may have spent a portion of your 47 years living under a rock. Almost a dozen schools were closed in my town and those surrounding, additionally I work at the hospital in town and watched plenty of patients either spend many days in the ICU or be killed from this flu. Getting the "standard" flu is one thing, mutated strains is much different. Clearly you are fortunate enough to have never witnessed friends or family affected by such illnesses but I guarantee if that day ever comes for you, which I hope it doesn't, than you won't be so absurd to call these a hoax.
Schools have suffered from closing due to flu strains as long as I can remember. Since I was a child. My point, is that H1N1 and SARS are no different than any other flu strain in that they will make people sick. It is not NEARLY at the "epidemic" rate that the media claims (claimed) them to be, and it is all so big Pharm can make money. That is the bottom line. The fact that the media gave them so much play, does not make them any more or less dangerous than all the other flu strains that we as a people have been exposed to. If people have weakened immune systems, underlying heath issues, are babies or elderly, they are at risk of death for these or ANY flu strain. This is nothing new, and sensationalizing it will not make it different in "reality'. Sorry. Don't agree with ya. Do you really think that the only flu strains that people actually died from are these? Every single year, people have died from the flu. If you think these strains are suddenly a game changer in that fact, then you need to do some research of you own. I am not so "absurd" that I will fall for the media hype that is out there. Again, this is nothing new. Only thing new is that the media uses scare tactics to get people to receive flu shots every year. And WOW...even with people getting flu shots (more so now than ever), there are still many flu cases for the people have RECEIVED the shot! Huh! Go figure. I don't think I'm the absurd one. It just takes a little common sense to see the real picture.

I will agree to disagree. But for the record, I base my knowledge off experience both in the public and in the hospital and science degrees, not "media hype." I've got a lot more to do with my time than argue on byc with someone I find to be terribly ignorant. As I mentioned though, maybe one day you or someone you know will have some experience with one of these diseases and then you'll realize that the term "flu" can't be used as an umbrella.

Sorry, didn't mean to start an argument. Regarding GMO food, I get the picture now. I thought the cobs grew that way. I worry about the long term effects also but the reason they say is to create more disease resistant and insect resistant crops and more abundant crops to feed the ever increasing population. So....we just have to try and shop locally and try to make wise choices.

Yes. I am currently freaking out about the bird flu. My husband has been offered a contract to go do some work in Shanghai. I'm mortified at the thought of him going there 1) that he could get the virus and 2) what is the risk of this to my birds? I've read that the virus persists on fomites for long periods of time.

All I can think right now is to tell him that he will have to go to a hotel when he comes home.

He is not sure he is even going yet. I'm not even sure who to call to ask questions. Maybe the director of our NPIP program.

So far he's not sure if this job is happening...

do we have bird flu in Australia?? we are getting ex battery hens and im just wondering because the factory farms would seem like the first place to spread a disease. I guess they are coming through a rescue and would probably have been overlooked by a vet so im not too overly worried about it...

I just talked to TAMU, they said that they would not be overly worried about his trip at this time since he won't be working with birds. They said just to make sure that we disinfect everything when he comes home and that should be enough. I'm going to have him shower and bag up all his clothes and shoes before he comes home. He will be disinfected as well as his stuff!

The last time he went to China (several years ago) these people came on the plane in biosecurity suits and took everyone on the plane's temperature and asked them health questions before the return flight took off. I wonder if they still do that.

I am such a worrywart...
