I don't know for certain. Do the Amish practice shunning? Or is that just a myth?

It's a very powerful impetus to crush their questioning, for sure.

Amish do practice shunning. They're far from the only ones though.. many isolationist and/or Fundamentalist sects do it. It's also an excellent tactic for keeping persons who are a 'threat' to their religion separated from their community of like minded people.

I absolutely cannot stand the whole missionary concept..

I'm with you guys on the missionary thing, but...

Not all churches have that obnoxious view when it comes to mission work. The church I attend has a huge mission project and goes on a trip every year to various impoverished parts of the world.
Zero preaching, they go to dig wells and build water treatment facilities!

Which is one of the many reasons I attend that church, even though I don't buy a word of the theology.

Not even for a 'good looker' wearing just a tie?

I suppose if they sent out missionaries like that, I might have bought myself a new religion!

This is how a friend says she handles unwanted religious solicitors who come to her door. She says, "Hello! Please come in...." Then she shouts, "Lucifer, honey, here are some more of those church people...... Start lighting the candles, get the rope and I'll bring them on into the bedroom....."

I THINK she's just joking, though.

Here's a Christian organization I've worked with that does a world of good by helping community development workers teaching farmers in poor countries how to grow their own food, purify water, etc. They also have a large seed bank and a vast data base of how to build solar ovens, oil presses, etc. They teach people about raising chickens, too.

That one I do not mind one bit! It teaches them to be self sufficent as well. I agree about the "strings attached part" which it has no business in hand in hand in getting what they need to feed the village.

Why does religion even have to be organized? why do we have to be told how to worship? i don't get organized religion!

i only read the first two pages of this..i am catholic however im often questioning it because i believe in God but our religion tells us not to be selfish (im saying this next part as nicely as possible) isnt it kinda selfish to want millions of people to worship YOU? ive also questioned things like noahs ark..where has a giant flood that wrecked the earth ever been recorded besides the Bible? i found this thread really interesting....
