I wondered about the tax breaks also Thai Turkey.

The first link in Molly's Folly was a bit difficult to read. The writer didn't get to his point quickly but at the end he seemed to be saying that Christianity isn't a religion because Christians have a relationship with God. Don't all religions seek to have a relationship with a higher power? I am sure that Hindus feel that they have a deep bond also.

I *loved* Religulous!
To be fair, I find Bill Maher pretty darn sexy...so I'm biased.
However, SO loved it too, so it's probably legitimately awesome

mom'sfolly :

I googled Christianity and Religion after you posted that link Deb. Evidently that guy's attitude is not that uncommon. I guess there is a trend in Christianity, at least some branches, to deny that it is a religion. I find this very interesting, because by every reasonable definition, it is certainly a religion. There is also an element of exclusivity in each of these links, implying that the wrong branches of Christianity are religion, but the right branches are not.

I hope I can find it at the video store.

I saw it, and he does ask some pointed questions of the people he interviews. However, I felt like he wasn't really having a dialogue with them, but came to make fun of them in a sort of twisted way. I would have respected the film more if it had felt like a documentary. It came across as a bit of a stand-up comedy act to me.

If we had come to post on this thread with the same attitude he had, then this thing would have been shut down days ago. It's just my opinion, and I know I tend to want everyone to play nice all the time, even if I disagree with them. Take that for what it's worth.

My family has turned their backs against DH and I because we aren't "religious" or go to church....but then again, they are very active "churchgoers" and that's pretty much all they do

I loved religulous! But, it was pretty snarky..... But that is Bill Maher..... funny, irreverant of everything!!! Not just religion. I just felt such pity in my heart for the "healed" gay man.....

Anyway, as for the site you gave us Deb?? All I can say is I don't care what he says, don't want to listen to him, but whoowee he is fine to look at!! So my thoughts weren't exactly holy!! As for what he says - he's a huckster...... 'nuff said.

I think Bill Maher is a total tool....but I loved Religulous. Just watched it yesterday. He seemed to only get snarky when he was hearing people contradict themselves or make outrageous claims they couldn't back up. His conversation with the vatican astronomer was very good.

I wished that I lived close to some of you. It would be nice to watch the Bill Maher DVD.

My hubby is Catholic and although he doesn't keep me from watching what I want, of course, I hate the thought of causing him pain. He has been very supportive of my break from religion and I appreciate that.

If I rent a DVD he will want to watch it with me. Maybe that would be a good thing, maybe a bad thing. I don't like the thought of hurting his feelings or making him feel like I am not showing the same respect for his faith that he has shown for me. To be honest, I might be underestimating him and he might enjoy the DVD and be able to answer most of Maher's questions.

Do any of you live in a household with different belief systems?
