Deb that was beautiful and that is how I feel about religion too.. it makes me sad and frustrated when people invest so much energy into trying to enforce religious-based views into laws that affect "everyone"... they believe it is for the best but in reality it can make many suffer or inconvenienced in various ways..

Well, I am not sure if I am allowed to comment or not...per the rules, but I will anyway! I don't believe in a religion either. I believe in salvation, and there is a big difference. You can spend your whole life wasting you time on a religion that will get you nowhere. I believe there is a God, who created everything, and deserves our reverence. He also had a Son who died for us, and short of believing in him and trusting in Him Nothing Else Matters.

So was that ok? I have no intention of arguing; just stating my belief!

You are making perfect sense Curliet! To even question the religion you were brought up in you must have an open mind! So you are not imagining that these folks are open minded just like you!

Deb, I agree!!! Living without feeling like you are always right is very uplifting!!! That was beautifully said!

Chicklunatic of course that is OK! This thread is all about accepting different beliefs. I'm pretty sure that Redux (the OP of this thread) feels the same way you do. She is also very tolerant of the rest of us and we appreciate it!

Thanks for sharing, Chicklunatic.

I think that by the definitions that we discussed here in this thread, your beliefs do fall under the parameters of "religion" as we define it.

You are, however, welcome to share any time you like. I respect your beliefs and your right to have them.

I think that the connection between religion and politics (note that I am not discussing a political stance) is that I view the various political parties and religions the same way - I'm willing to listen before I decide what I think, but I'm not going to accept a particular view as truth before I think about it.

But I've got a lot of friends and neighbors who treat politics the same way as they treat their religion (and, without mentioning parties, one side of the debate is definitely worse than the other) and for many the two are intertwined - their religion dictates their politics.

This is totally off topic- I am not trying to hijack my own thread, but what you wrote reminded me of something a coworker once said to me.

We were talking about some issue or other, I don't remember what, and he said (in an accusatory tone), "You're one of them liberals, aren't you?"

As a card-carrying Republican at the time, I was taken aback. But I realized then and there that I just can't be pigeonholed on anything. I am a free thinker.

I hate that.

I agree with the republicans on some issues, the democrats on others, and disagree with both on still others. Some of my views are conservative, some are liberal. The thing I have noticed is that the people who are die-hard one or the other show a remarkable tendency towards playing fast and lose with the truth, and I HATE that. If your cause is so just and so righteous, you should be able to defend it without stretching the truth or flat out lying.

We recorded a show that was aired the past Wednesday on PBS about the Buddha.

Did any of you watch it?

I watched part of it, I think I mentioned that earlier in the posts. It was very interesting and wanted to have that come back so I can watch it again.

I'm not religious at all, but have very strong moral beliefs about respecting the world around us, being kind to others, and acting conscientiously about the way that our actions affect others.

Looks like this topic generated a lot of interest!
