HI,

I live just north of Albany, just south of Saratoga. OUr local pet food store has a lovely Dane who hangs out there when he's not out on the show circuit. They also have a poster on their bulletin board, a Dane rescue group who's always looking for homes for rescue Danes - and sometimes there are puppies who need rescuing!

If you want their number, send me a PM and I'll swing over by there and get it. The other thing you could do is go to the AKC (American Kennel Club) website, click on breeds, click on Great Danes, and besides lots of breed info, you will find links to local breeders and the breed rescue site.

I would recommend staying away from want-ads and so forth, any really good breeder has a long list of customers and doesn't have to advertise. And even if you spend more in the beginning for a quality pup, you save in the long run on big vet bills for a poorly bred pup. Also, any reputable breeder will make good on the dog if there's a problem that's not your fault...

Sorry if I'm telling you things you already know, but I rented(for five years) my last house from one of the top Newfoundland breeders in the world and been active in Newfies for ten years...I've seen so many dogs and people suffer needlessly because they didn't do their research and take the time to find a truly good breeder who produces the best quality dogs possible. Danes are such a wonderful breed, and I'd hate to see you get one that would turn out to be a heartache when it was avoidable.

Good luck and let me know if you want the info on the local Dane rescue group.

PS, all you local folks - don't be complaining that you can't get birds locally,

Its probably nagdrl, i've worked with them before. We rescued a dane from a woman that we got our brutus from- we couldnt keep her because of where we lived and had to rehome her to the north atlantic great dane rescue league, and they were not very pleasant people to work with. I like them because theyre SO particular and you literally need a PhD, a six figure income, and lawyer to adopt from them. When we had to rehome brutus we went with them again- I explained the situation and they were very understanding and sympathetic, but once the time came to hand him over the woman was so cold and the people they found for him NEVER got in touch with me again EVER- and neither did the rescue!

I wouldnt deal with them to get a dog. I just dont like how they treat people- they treat the dogs like gold, but the people like trash.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread and I'm probably butting in (again) where I'm don't belong, but I would like to offer some perspective on why you don't often hear back from the rescue or the new owner after you surrender an animal.

Most people adopting the animal want some degree of privacy, especially from the prior owner. There have been many cases where the old owner finds their circumstances change and they want their dog back. Or, they don't like something about the way the new person is treating the dog (and it is a matter of opinion...not a real safety issue for the dog) and the old owner wants to interfere.

Many fine families are hesitant to adopt because they don't want any involvement with the prior family and they feel that the rescue group has already been invasive enough....and sometimes it IS just too much....

Plus, the rescue group is a volunteer organization, so they often just don't have time, even if they wanted to keep prior owners up to date on the animals that found new homes.

It is NOT a reflection on you.....it's just making a clean break for everyone. It's almost always best for everyone involved...believe me!!

I'm so sorry if you were not treated with respect and empathy...but sometimes the rescue person has driven hours and hours of extra time that week, over and above a full time job...they are almost always struggling for money and when you take in a dog, you STILL have to pay vet bills to bring shots up to date and wondering who will foster each dog, etc. Sometimes the rescue person is just dog tired and feels that just taking the dog is comfort enough for the surrendering owner.

YES...giving up any pet can be emotional and make you feel guilty, but not all rescue people are equipped to handle the surrender with great empathy.

If the breed rescues are doing a good job, in general, for the animals, then we have to be thankful for that because it's an expensive, emotional roller coaster to do rescue sometimes. I hope this helps a bit.

Good luck finding your dane! I agree with going to a breeder with a great reputation, even if it means shipping or waiting because the large breeders are so prone to many life shortening problems. Make sure the parents have hip XRay records and read about panosteitis...too much protein in the puppy food. Also read about bloat and gastric torsion.

Happy puppy hunting!!

Oh no, we were in constant contact over the matching process. We talked on the phone repeatedly. They were so excited about Brutus, and said over and over how heart breaking it was for us to have to give him up, they even gave us their address to "come and visit him any time you're in the area!" Gave me their phone number, and their email, said they'd send pictures.

Even when we were loading Brutus into their SUV they all were saying good bye to me and insisting just as soon as they got home they'd send pictures of him in his new home- they'd keep me updated.

if it were just a cut and dry transaction i wouldnt expect anything. But it was so friendly and honest seeming. I couldnt get brutus back if I wanted to, The paper work was legal and binding and i signed him over to magdrl- completely losing my rights to him.

I emailed them twice. Once a week after the fact, once a few months later. Never heard anything.

it was very unkind. I wouldnt do it again. For all I know they took him to some vet, paid for extra services that I normally didnt get and found he had some horrible disease and had to be put down. Or he got hit by a car. Or some other awful thing.

It was very cruel to not even email back and say "hey leave us alone" nothing.
