Anyone ordered from Sandhill Preservation before?

Quote:
This would be the post I was referring to in my last statement.

I was not singling anyone out, merely suggesting that perhaps, even if one does not agree with the delivery, that some points are valid and worth considering.

I was the one who cried troll, and not because his opinion differed from mine. I've seen a lot of message boards in my time, and when someone feels that they have to repeatedly differ - point by point - with what others are saying, and cannot seem to agree to disagree, that is by definition is being a troll. I was not referring to his opinions, simply the pedantic style of his posts. I stand by what I said, and this is the last I'll say about it.

Adam,

I was very interested in Sandhill's Mille Fleur Leghorns. I couldn't get around the idea of buying 25 chicks straight run, though. I did that last year, and I'm just not up for all the roosters this year...

If you do get some, though, I would be very interested in seeing pics! That is one thing about Sandhill--you can't see pics of the birds.

We ordered from Sandhill months ago to be shipped yesterday. Nothing no call from them or the post office so I guess we wait for the backup dates. The grandkids are very disappointed . I really dont like the idea of waiting for a call from them. dont think I'll order from them again unless the birds are very good.

It says on their site that they will be adding pics, well it has said that for 3 or 4 years. It would be nice to even see a pic of some of the rarer colors even. We have emailed him for pics before and never get replies.

After cruising Sandhill's website, I get the impression that they don't have a lot of time to devote to emailing and updating the site. I can only imagine how busy they must be at this time of year--trying to hatch out chicks to fill multiple-breed orders, and also deal with the horticulture end of their business.

I give them credit for their efforts! Where in the world would you find Mille Fleur Leghorns? LOL My thinking is, if you want what they've got, you have to just be patient and understand that it isn't a big company. That said, I did give up on ordering from them. I couldn't live with straight run orders or having an open-ended delivery date due to a mixed order.

I am waiting for arrival of my order from them.
Glen is a school teacher during the day and does Sandhill Preservation stuff in the evenings after work. Look at the number of chicks of each breed they hatch, they are not commercial hatchery who hatches a 4 millions chicks and has full staff. As to quality of the birds they hatch I cannot say anything about it because I am new to chicken world.

Professional, I agree w/others that your 'tude is abrasive, but I appreciate that you took the time to give us your views. It is certainly a rare opportunity to hear what is behind the cold shoulder some have experienced from the show and breeder quarter.

So, everyone else: now that we have peeked behind the curtain, those who want "better birds" in our favorite breeds can call breeders and ask, "Got any culls you want to sell me?" A breeder's culls would be perfect for me, I want healthy stock to lay eggs and keep me company in the yard while serving as moving/clucking eye candy.

As far as culls go, some have a little thing wrong with them, for example we culled a wyandotte bantam because he was a 1/4 pound more than we would like, the people that we gave him to love him and used him to perfect their flock. Alot of great birds get sold as culls because of something small, like size, an off colored feather, or in the case of sumatras, not enough spurs. We ordered sandhills 30 ducks for 50 bucks deal and it is due this week. We also decided to try them again for chicks, we are getting some colored dorkings, legorns, longcrowers, and some others that I cant think of. This time there has been more communication, and better service so far.

Even if people are not fans of Sand Hill Preservation the one thing that has to be given to them is that they have kept Heritage breeds in the public eye and some representation of them available. That in my books, is an invaluable service for the poultry world in general.

Professional did make some valid points on the show side of poultry. Spend some time in the breeding and showing world and you will see the same attitude from some of the breeders, and others that are very open to answering and instructing those who others would consider a waste of their time. You will also find breeders of retirement age who just sit back and watch the ego set strut and laugh. Those are the ones to seek out, if you really want to advance your poultry stock. Decades of experience, still in it because they love the breed, and past the arrogant stage that some go through.
