I am just in love with my babies. I don't know of many people who have this breed. Just wanting to know more about them. I heard they are awesome layers!!

I love to look at my silver-spangled hamburgs. They are beautiful, and so quick and active. They are very shy, but I can deal with that because I have other friendly varieties of chickens that like attention, so I can hold them while I watch the SSH's.

I had two SSH's in my last flock. They were beautiful and very prolific layers. Their eggs were smallish - kind of long and pointy. Be warned, however... if they free range, they were my most tricky layers. We never could find their nests until there were a bunch of eggs in it, and as soon as we emptied it out, they'd find another hiding place to lay. I don't have those girls anymore; they had to go to a new home when we moved.

I have 5 SSH's now, 14 weeks old. One is a cockerel, and he is going to be gorgeous. They are very early maturing birds, so I'm hoping to have eggs from them in the next 4 weeks. I don't remember how early my last girls laid.

This is Yoda, our SSH cockerel, with his polish pal, Geronimo:

I like McMurray but they were not hatching this late for the birds I wanted. They were actually order from Iowa Welp Hatchery, but New Mexico hatched them.

Our SS Hamburgs are very flighty as well, but they sure are pretty and they are awesome layers. Until the days started getting much shorter we were getting 4-5 eggs a day from our 5 girls. I have 21 of their eggs in the bator right now

hoping to get several more pullets and a replacement cockerel since all of ours are over 3 years old.
