Anyone seen this? Strange Feathering on a blue Runner *PIC HEAVY*

mine has similar feathers, not exactly thought....so would mine be a tux???? im all confused with this colouring malarky lol........

Yours is an absolutely gorgeous Blue Bibbed! Very, very pretty! "Tux" is not an official color. It seems to be just a name that IamCuriosityCat is calling her Blue Runners. I don't see what makes this "tux" color different from the standard blue. Maybe she can give more information like what the genotype is of the color she is working with. It seems to be normal Blue to me. It is a great color though.

Pretty much just duplicating what everyone else has said. The blues are supposed to be laced. The spots and white are less desirable for show, but what do us pet owners care? Didn't see it mentioned here, but the lacing will fade and then come back anew after each molt. Tux is a real cutie.

The tuxedo blue is just what I'm calling the offspring of fawn/white crossed with blue or (apparently) black--it's basically blue in genotype, but with only one black and one blue dilution, plus the runner pattern (in a single dose) and a fawn dilution. The phenotypic result is usually a basically blue duck with a white bib and sometimes white on the wings. For me, it is a step toward an overall mottled look I am going for, but it looked like a tuxedo and when I called it a "blue tuxedo" someone else picked it up and called it "tuxedo blue," which I liked better, and the name has more or less stuck.

teresa--yours has GORGEOUS markings. Much more distinct than what is coming out of my experiments.

Wow - awesome See I told you guys I've never had a blue duck before - except a blue/silver and white muscovy when I was a kid!

So I'm new to the whole blue color phenomenon. I love Tuxedo Blue as a description than Blue Bibbed

- its much snazzier sounding.

Iamcuriositycat - awesome I have no idea about genetics - lol - but with the fawn dilution does that affect any offspring that tux might throw? I was thinking of getting a drake and it either being A.) blue or B.) fawn and white.... What color do you think best to breed her to? Should I try for a black or what? - LOL I'm not saying this - pretend it was never said

- but I may breed runners next year. we'll see

I need to get me a new camera so I can take good pictures again. That or figure out the youtube (which I never have used - GASP ) and take a video of my gang at breakfast or treat time (these are the funniest times - especially when Sam my black cat decides he wants to get involved - then all the "big kids" get terrifed and go fly-running back to the neighbors and their favorite hang out at the woods. )

Well, what may happen in the next generation is exactly what I want to find out this fall!

My best guess, based on the genetics as I understand them:

Bred to a blue drake... argh... it's so late at night... let's see... the offspring would receive one or two black genes, one, two, or no blue genes, one or no runner pattern genes, one or no brown dilution genes... Sooo.... could be black tuxedo, dark brown tuxedo, another blue tuxedo, silver tuxedo (not sure you'd be able to tell it had a tux though), pure black, pure blue, pure silver, pure dark brown... I think that's it...

There, that clears it up nicely, doesn't it?

Bred to black.. similar results, but without the silver options... I think...

Bred to fawn/white, ... I'll have to fill those blanks in later 'cause my dearest is calling me to bed and I intend to heed the call.

Okay so from what I'm gathering its a toss up on whatever I'll get? LMAO its a gamble - no telling the results - cause honestly from what you were saying all I got out of that was "blah blah blah - I don't know blah blah blah" LMAO i know NOTHING about genetics except b/b/s in chickens - lol.

Thank you iamcuriositycat, she/he is lovely, thinking more a he.... just hope the colour stays once they have theor molt which is due around about 8 weeks I think.....

Thanks everyone for their kind comments, I feel so lucky to have my great runners, im also planning on hatching some out one year... really want to wait until the eggs are a good size, and until my ducks are more mature for best results in good strong ducklings...

Hey--you're part way there. The black/blue/silver genes in ducks are the same as in chickens, so you already know that part. Now throw in a runner pattern gene that causes the neck and a ring around the bottom to turn white, plus a brown dilution that turns black to brown, and you've got it.

As for fawn/white, I started to make a list of potential outcomes, but it got WAY complicated and I got overwhelmed, lol. So, yeah, I don't really know what the outcome would be, but it will be interesting, and there's a potential for many different color combinations in any given batch of babies. Should be fun.

If you're going to buy a drake, you might approach the color from the point of view of what will happen when you breed to the black ducks, which is a simpler equation. Blue to black will produce some black and some blue offspring. Black to black will produce all black offspring. Fawn/white to black will produce a variety of tuxedoes (I think).

If you want to sell ducklings at some point, having at least some pure color offspring will increase the sales value of the babies, so a blue drake would be your better option. If it's just for fun and you really love the tuxedoes and the "surprise" factor, then the fawn/white could be your better choice. Of course, Tux's offspring are going to give you a certain amount of "surprise" factor regardless of what color your drake is.
