I wasnt sure what section to put this. I have a girl who is Dons favorite and shes missing a bit of feathers on her back. Shes not cut but Id like to prevent it. My sewing machine cord is broke so I cant make one. Does anyone sell them?
If you can't find anyone with some already made then let me know and I'll make some. Also if you will catch your roo once a month and clip his nails (like you would a dog's) then that will solve alot of the problem.
I recently had to deal with a dozen or so bare backed hens due to amorous roos. One or two had even gotten sliced pretty deeply on side flank and my roos don't even have spurs yet.
So at roosting time when they returned to coop I cut strips of duct tape and put across the bare back of each female. (Lift the wings so you don't tape them down and cut it long enough to cover the back and go slightly down the sides)
They all looked pretty funny in their new chicken fashions but it did the trick. It fell off after about a week and there was new feather growth on each hen - nice and fuzzy. I need to do it again since they've all lost their "chicken tape" now.
Edited to add: Here's a picture - you can see two of the hens wearing their "chicken tape" in this picture with my peacocks. The wings hide most of it.
