Anyone sell chicks? Need advice on a breed to sell. How much?

You could try to get a roo that would give you sex-linked chicks. Being able to guarantee pullets is one sure fire way to get yours sold ahead of everyone else's.

you need to have a plan for what you will do with all the males you will be able to sell some but not the rest. RiR chicks are grate chickens for new backyard chicken owners

I
am breeding my own sex-link chicks for myself and for friends. I wouldn't recommend breeding sex-links for all your customers because you'll inevitably end up with a bunch of roosters to raise for yourself, which is not at all cost efficient.

Hmm that is very interesting. Could you get more if you can guarantee the gender. Also if you do that, then you are not selling pure breeds correct?

Also couldn't you sell "straight run" ? Do you get less for that?

Apparently the desire for different breeds is regional. In my area of SoCal, the feed stores ALWAYS have Buff Orps, Barred Rocks, RIR's and EE's. Now and then they get other breeds that sell in a snap.

Hey,

I recommend that you sale them as chicks because if you raise them what if something gets to them (predator) or they get sick? You never know. Also I think you should sale different breeds because everyone has different likes and dislikes in chickens.

Happy Hatching

I would say do a little research to find out what types of chickens sell well in your area. Like debiraymond said, it is regional. In my area white Leghorns are popular because they lay a lot of eggs. Barred rocks are also popular since they are a little more colorful but also good egg layers. I would ask around at the feed stores to see what kinds of chicks go faster than others and then breed those. I would sell them as straight run chicks and not try to keep them to egg laying age because you would wind up with a lot of roosters that you are feeding until you can tell the difference. The lady I bought my chickens from would raise how much she charged for the chicks 50 cents every week to cover the cost of feeding them.
