Anyone setting eggs tomorrow (13th March, EDD Apr 3rd)

Raimnel: I reckon yours will all go from rocking to pip to zip to hatch in a couple of hours and the rest of us will still be at here twiddling our thumbs waiting for pips...

I'm not sure whether to worry when the rocking stops, or because some aren't rocking at all.
Its like talking to stones with the others.

Blue Jersey Giant still wriggles at me but the rest have gone all quiet.

By the way, I'm dangling temp probe into a gap between the eggs - is that ok, or should it be above or below them?
Maybe there's hot spots because the 4 eggs that wriggle are all right in the center.

Wish I'd pointed their tops towards me so I could see egg number on them.

Hope one pips tomorrow.
Can't bare it any longer!

Are they actully supposed to arrive ON day 21
OR
AFTER 21 days of incubation are complete so actually on the 22nd day...?????????

How long do they rock before pipping?
How long from pip to zip?
How long from zip to out? and how long to fluff up?

Usually, if all conditions were right throughout the incubation period, the majority of the actual hatching should occur on day 21.

The last questions all vary greatly. I have had chicks pip to hatch in an hour and a half my last go around. Others, pip, sleep, zip, sleep, zip some more, sleep some more, etc and can take a full day or longer from pip to hatch.

So its not unreasonable to hope for pips tomorrow am when i wake up ( beginning of day 21).

Sigh. I'm seeing things - one potential pip tunred out to be a speck of poop and another one looked like a crack but was an illusion, and yet another was a scratch.

No, tomorrow is my day 21. What is interesting though, is all 3 that have pipped are from our own 6 bantam cochin eggs. They are also in our borrowed incubator, which I have had the most trouble keeping regulated for temp.

The rest of the eggs were shipped and nada so far. They are also in my own trusty incubator that has been easier to regulate, and from which I had an excellent hatch out of in Feb where 11/13 eggs hatched.

So go figure....

Are any of you using the carton method for hatching, or do you have your eggs on the floor of the incubator? I'm using LG's w/ fans. Just wondering if you may have pips you can't see if they are on the floor of your bator. By using the carton method, you place the air cell end up, and the first pip's are using right near the edge of the air pocket, so they are easier to see? Just a thought.

Tamara

Well now I'm depressed. Hoping you were a day ahead.

Yeah, mine are on the floor not carton. I did think that.
I decided not to use a carton because I read several posts where a chick pipped at the wrong end.

See when I do my candling on day 18, my main focus other than looking for quitters, is identifying the air cell, and making sure I place it UP in the carton. If the chick is pipping at the wrong end, it probably doesn't have much of a chance to begin with as he won't find the air cell. If the egg is placed wrong end up, due to human error, I suppose it can happen, I am just super extra careful when placing them in to be sure I have the correct end up.

I didn't like placing them on the floor, because once a few hatch, they are flinging themselves about inside the incubator, moving all the other eggs around, while they try and figure out how to stand up and walk around. So you may have a guy just about to start zipping, and then he is rolled over or rolled across the floor or crawled upon by the other chicks that have already hatched. At least in the carton, they chicks still trying to hatch remain stable.

Tamara

Its a tough call...I was going to do the carton - even spent 20 minutes cutting bottoms out of cartons ready, but changed my mind at the last minute.
Probably try that next time...

I had mine in the carton day 1-18 then at lock down I put 2 eggs in a coffee filter (well the filters are 2 thick). Hoping to catch the crap and sloww the soccer game. ??? We'll see what happens.
