Anyone setting eggs tomorrow (13th March, EDD Apr 3rd)

Oh I forgot, someone back ???? pages someone said they were going to use coffee filters next time???? I don't remember what hatching method they just used but I used the coffee filters, it was to crowded the chick couldn't properly stretch out. However I do like them for keeping eggs in place. Next time I have decided i'm going to use like 4 coffee filters with at most 2 eggs in each then put the rest of the eggs around them. we'll see how that works.

OK, picture time!!!

They are just gorgeous. They are so fluffy!
My favourite is the Andalusian on the right

I'm trying to work out if one of mine is a BLRW. It does look like that.

Latest update: one of the ones I rescued from shrink wrap has hatched itself out fully now.
clap.gif
Its still attached to the egg by a strand with a lump of yolk between it and the egg. When it tugs it pulls on its navel which bulges and makes me feel a bit queasy somehow. The BCM is curled up in its half an egg, but seems ok for now. The one I released fully is fine. Drying off. These 3 have been very nerve wracking! Still keeping

for the BCM and the 2 pips.

Raimnel: think I will try coffee filters next time. There doesn't seem to be a perfect solution. The egg carton risks the upside down pipper. Coffee filters the chicks can still kick the eggs about - and am convinced that's how my BJG died. What else is there? Something which won't block moisture passage, take up too much room, hurt the chicks but will contain teh eggs while letting them roll a little, and cheap and easy to clean.

I considered cookie cutters, but might cause injury when the chicks tumble around. Some sort of ring?

and it was the one egg we didn't think would come from anything because it was the one we grabbed out of the general revnue of the eating eggs so it's a something...

Congrats loopy, congrats all with new chicks and pips.

Loopy, I doubt its because you opened your bator. Seriously-I open mine all.the.time especially during hatches.
When I open, I rewet a sponge so the pips dont shrink wrap. This hatch has sucked for me, but my last 2 hatches went a ok opening the bator. Looking back, I think my 1st & 2nd hatches were a bust because they were shrink wrapped. I stuck to lockdown for that and the 2nd hatch and I got 1 hatchling out of 12.

I candled my 3 eggs tonite. I didnt see any movement in them. But I left them in just in case. Today was day 21, but I have had hatchers day 22 and 23.

The lady I got them from (for free) isnt a hatcher at all....she didnt even know what breeds she had except for the silkies. All the eggs were awfully clean compared to the ones she let my kids pick up out of nests when we were there. And I have no idea how long or how they had been stored (she brought us out some that were already in a carton). However, they all developed, so not sure why they all arent hatching.

I LOVE the B/B/S cochins!!!!

All pics are adorable!

Congrats on the pip Kybra!

on the shrink wrapping. I'm so glad I checked them though.
Pleased to report all 3 shrink wrapped chicks are now out and fine. Phew.

:weee:ya
The BCM really struggled and came out backwards in the end, but its out. I was really worried about that one as I tore a blood vessel unpeeling it and it bled a tiny bit

. Seems fine though.
So relieved.

The two post-shrink-wrap pips are now a zip and a pip and don't seem to be shrink wrapped at all
hu.gif

So think we're now up to 12 chicks.

And I'm going to bed I think as the endangered ones are out.

I'm sorry for the losses.

But congrats on all the babies! Loopy, I'm glad it worked out for your babies that were stuck.

I was really pleased with hatching in egg cartons. I hatched 10 of 11 eggs. It worked out really well for me.

More shrink wrapping this morning.
hit.gif

Don't know if its from original event, or problems with the incubator or what. Humidity is 75%, but they're still drying out
hu.gif

I think we're on the final stretch though. Have half helped another 4 this morning (taken half the eggshell and membrane off, dampened membrane and put back in the incubator).
2 of those have hatched themselves out, the other two still have blood vessels in their membranes so are presumably shutting it down and finishing yolk absorption. They seem fine though. If all 4 of these make it then we will have 7 chicks that wouldn't have made it without help thanks to the shrink wrapping
th.gif

They are healthy and vigourous though so I think its ok, and the fault was either mine or the incubator's.

I'm torn on what to do with my duck eggs when the time comes. I was going to use this incubator as a hatcher as the Brinsea seems so small for ducklings to hatch out in but now I'm not confident about the humidity.

Either way I won't be opening the bator no matter what...

Here's a pic of a few of mine. The one on the left is a blue silkie, then an EE, Black Orpington and another EE. I had several losses and one that was born with it's intestines on the outside. I have a real messy incubator to clean this morning. Congrats to everyone! I ended up with 13 babies. 4 losses (1 pipped and quit, one zipped and quit, one pipped at the wrong end and the one with the intenstine issue.) and 3 that did nothing. Overall pretty good I guess.

the only 2 to hatch! there adorable! the runner i think im naming sookie from trueblood on hbo.. not sure if anyone has watched that lol.
and for some reason not sure if anyone has seen this either but snookie from jersey shore with the poof i was thinking to name her snookie so i will have sookie and snookie lmao any other ideas for the silkie!!
