Anyone Setting Eggs Tonight 3/31/2011 - Come join me if you like!

I've heard that Silkie-X hens are quite good at incubating. I have several Silkie-X hens who are laying eggs, but they won't be a year old until July. Should they show signs of broodiness after they turn a year old? I'd love to let them incubate the eggs!

I don't know about the silkie crosses, but I have an Ameraucana and a Cinnamon Queen (CQ not breed to be broody) and they will both be a year old the end of May and the Ameraucana is due to hatch Monday and the Cinnamon Queen the first week of May. Don't know if that's normal or if it's because both breeds start laying before a lot of different breeds.

We set eggs on 3.27 and they hatched on 4.16. I have two bantams and two standard mix mutts

The funny thing is that the bantams don't hang out with the bantam easter egger roos but - Ahem Ahem one of the bantam babies is clearly not a black bantam cochin and surprisingly easter egger! Very very cute...I really hope it is not a roo!

Momma and babies doing great!

When you say rockin and rolling.....Does that mean they are rolling around and moving in the incubator? I am going on day 19 and I have not seen a egg move

Periwigs is a virtue. Though I admit I have a very hard time at it. Most of the time the eggs will start pipping/hatching on day 20-21. I usually see them rocking on days 18-19. Then they are very still until they start aggressively trying to hatch out. Don't fret, give them time and for Pete's sake quit worrying about opening the bator! I open mine several times in "lockdown" cause I keep adding eggs till the bator is full so have to open to take out fluffy chicks. I have had all of my 16 chicks hatch on time over a four day span so far and have 5 more that should hatch today or tomorrow and they are fine and hatched fine at 55% humidity.

Yeah, they kind just rock side to side...it is really neat, you really have to stare at the egg, that's for sure!
