Anyone Setting Eggs Tonight 3/31/2011 - Come join me if you like!

Well, this morning I don't see the heartbeat, so now I am sad with you.....

Mine were day 4 before I saw anything petunias212....don't give up hope...I was feeling the exact same way, but then to my surprise, I moved the flashlight around a little and found some veins....Have you tried candling from the top down or from the side?

Mike, none of my Ameracauna eggs look like yours in the pic

mine all have a dark glob, forgot where I read that if the dark glob (which is the yolk) moves easily to the top, it's infertile....all my Ameracauna eggs have a dark glob that moves when i move the egg and no veining from anywhere - I'm not going to give up, hoping with the temp fluctuating as it has the first few days that, my hatching is just going at a slower rate - but i guess that's the gamble you take on shipped eggs - you never really know what you're getting...will I buy shipped eggs again? Only if I know the person personally and can drive or walk to get the eggs......

Awesome....What day is that egg?? Mine look nothing like that for sure.

Did you see the pics of my day 4 eggs? https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=477647

I
am right with you in every way. I have 8 Ameracauna as well and I should be able to see something in those but I do not. And I actually can see in my Maran eggs. The one picture in that link that I think might be fertile, Is actually a pretty dark Maran egg. I am sooooo dissapointed. Heart broken really. I know I candled early but I am not candling every day. I will wait and candle on day 7 since I know I cannot wait till day 10. Thank God I paid with a check for my eggs locally. I e-mailed the seller and he was not very nice either. This is what I e-mailed him

"It appears as though all but 2 of my eggs are not fertile. I candled this evening. I took pics and posted them to a forum to which I am a member and the general consensus if non of my eggs look viable/fertile. I will wait until day 10 and double check. If no more are fertile, May I please send you pics and pick up some more eggs?

Thanks"

And this was his response to me:

I assure you those eggs are fertile. As you saw when you picked up your eggs from my hatching room, I'm hatching about 400 chicks a week. If I had a fertility problem, I would know about it. The Marans, Welsummer and Ameraucana eggs are all too thick shelled and pigmented to rely on candling

I drove 45 mins for these eggs because he website seemed so nice and his farm was even nice. For the most part. He did NOT have 400 chicks when I was there so I dont know what he is talking about 75-100 tops. But whatever. I will wait a few more days and hope that they are in fact fertile. I am going to place a stop payment on the check if they are not because he does not seem like he would replace my $42 eggs for any reason. Plus the $15 in gas since gas is almost $4.00 a here. He just doesnt seem to care at all. Meanwhile, I am heart broken. I know he is full of poop because another forum member told me you can see in a Ameracauna egg for sure and that no shell is too thick to see thru. I am so sad :-(

Also, Mine are juist like yours. They all have a blob either in the center or in the fat end of the egg that moves when I move the egg just like a regular yolk.

This early on the yolk still moves around in the egg. It isn't untill there is a lot more veining that the yolk is more stationary. I'll take and post a video of what an early growth egg will look like when you move it around. If you're seeing more than a yolk moving around and it looks like an air bubble, that's a broken air cell, and usually those won't develop, at least in my experience with them. Out of the 9 bantam Araucana eggs I have set, one had a broken air cell, and there was absolutely no growth.

You guys are a bad influence on me! I had decided not to candle until Day 7 at least, but DD and I couldn't resist. We have 6 Ameraucanas with definite veining (hooray!), 5 Ameraucana "maybes" (the shells are so dense on those I can't see anything), 2 possibly viable Silkies, and 6 Silkies that look like duds to me but we'll candle again in a few days.

You are right, I can tell this will be addictive. And the temp in the 'bator didn't drop at all!

Will be looking forward to the video....I wish I knew if my eggs were growing? I see veins in all 3 Americauna eggs, but I don't see the heartbeat in one that I saw it in last night and I don't see an embryo moving in it yet? It will be 5 days tonight....I can't see anything in my brown eggs though, LOL

I would love to see that video when you're able to post it...and appreciate the info..

I'm going to remain hopeful since it's so early...

I am on board, I set 12 Barnevelder eggs on April 1, so just a day later. This is my second hatch, my first was awful 1/12. This time I am not going to mess with them.
