Anyone Setting Eggs Tonight 3/31/2011 - Come join me if you like!

Here's my lone chick - My son donated his beanie baby octopus so pepper would have some company - he or she snuggles right up to it and sleeps on it or beside it...poor lil thing must be lonely....It's an Ameracauna.

Everyone's chicks look so great!!!!! I'm loving the pictures!

For those that haven't hatched yet - it's still early in the game and I agree with the others, if your temps fluctuate enough on the low side, you might be hatching late - but day 20 or 21 is not late, so don't give up yet...

Don't give up, you're only on day 20.

As much as I tried, I just had to put my ear to the eggs before they started going crazy chirping, just to see if there was any activity....I know that's frowned upon - but could you do that to just one and tap the egg lightly while holding it to your ear to see if you hear anything? Figure if you can at least hear one, it will give you hope for the rest. I'm going to get scolded for even suggesting this, so I'll shut up now :X

You should go to TSC or look on craigslist for another chick for company. He/she is adorable. Wish I had a chick.

Bator is clean, sanitized and running again...only this time, I have two dove eggs my white dove laid a few days ago...I'm using the ReptiTemp 500R thermostat this time and it's done a fantastic job keeping the temp stable....

I'm going to try the electric frying pan bator version next week with a few trial eggs - that method has really peaked my curiousity enough to want to try for myself!

Aww I wish I were setting more eggs after this hatch is done, but my next set of eggs probably won't be until my faverolle starts laying again and then this fall when I hopefully have a breeding pair of araucanas (knowing my luck all 4 will either be all hens, all roosters, or all tufted... But then I could always use a rooster to make olive eggers... Lol)

Hey Petunias! I loved seeing the pics of the Octopus that your son donated.

That is so sweet. The chicks everyone hatched are so cute! It is definitely exciting to see life come into the world.

I also wanted to mention something about the Pan-O-Bator that I didn't put in the info. When my chicks hatched I left them in the pan for about 45 minutes, then I moved them to a rubbermaid box with a heat lamp and thermometer. I took out the shells after they hatched too, just so the other chicks wouldn't get eggshell fragments stuck to their down.

Congratulations on the hatching everyone. Don't be discouraged. My first two attempts were with shipped eggs, (Silkies). I spent over 100.00 for eggs and I have (what DH refers to) the 100.00 chicken! It was the only one that survived from the two hatches. She is a Grey Partridge Silkie. My Grand Daughter named her Cinderella.

I was heartbroken about the other attempts, but I was determined to hatch some eggs!

I plan to try shipped eggs again in my Pan-O-Bator and see if it works any better. I'm pretty sure the eggs were shrink wrapped from the fan. I really feel confident that the pan will do a much better job.

Happy Hatching Y'all!

Mike, I've read up on the faverolles and they sure are some pretty birds - and from what I read, they have the best disposition and temperament, thought that would be best seeing as we have young children....those and silkies.......I'm going to get some eggs to hatch but I won't do so until I have a better bator and that won't be until mid June when we'll have some extra play money.....what's your experience with the Faverolles, how do you like them??

I candled and listened to my eggs. I have 1 with movement but no chirping and I hurried and put it back in. One I think had movement and the rest I believe are dead. I can see the baby inside and when I twisted the egg around the baby did not move and looks dead. I am soooooo sad. No one was chirping so I think maybe its just early for the one that is alive and maybe he/she will hatch tomorrow. Today is day 21.

For the most part, favs are a very sweet docile bird. The one I have is, but she's also always been a bit of a spaz as well lol just like all animals, some live up to being great pets, some not so much lol I would definitely suggest them if you are interested. Now silkies are big balls of goofy fluff. Chewbacca is a sweet guy unless he feels threatened by our Pomeranian, then he's in fight mode. But he's great to us and doesn't mind being held. If your looking for a friendly hen, our friendliest is our Dutch bantam. She flys right up to the inside coop door to say hi, knows her name, and loves attention lol usually when I'm giving our hens treats, she'll sit there and peck the food out of the hand I'm holding it in (she's not spoiled at all...lol) while I'm throwing the treats to the rest of them with the other.
