I have a friend who is considering moving from Charlotte area of NC to the Salem, Oregon area.
Her husband may have a job op there...

Anyone have any comments/opinions/advice on the area?

Cost of living, pros/cons, weather, schools?

Also, she is Jewish - anyone know anything about the Jewish community/lack thereof?

Any and all information would be appreciated!

I have a bunch of family in Oregon and the Willamette Valley (includes Salem area) is on my short list of places to live. Here are a few reasons why:

Probably the most important thing ...... they have water!
(note, Im in Durham, NC ..... drought capitol of the East!)

Next, Salem is close to the best waterfowl farm anywhere.... Holderreads Farm in Corvallis.

And, it is just a day jaunt to the best quilt shop.... in Sisters, OR and the best (according to our Terrie) fabric bargain shop.... Fabric Depot near Oregon City.

Plus, it is just a beautiful area!!! Someday, Im going to find a place there.

Salem is the capitol and is very diverse. Nearby Portland is awesome and the beach is just a day trip away. That area of Oregon is supposed to have some of the best gardening in the country, too.

Oh, and it isnt so darn hot and humid in the summer as NC.

A few things to consider about Oregon:

There is a state income tax.

Portland is a very liberal city and that is quickly spreading.
In fact, the Mayor of Portland, Tommy Potter, actually spent $20,000 in city funds to help suppliment the rent of some of the illegal aliens who missed work because they were detained after the Del Monte plant was raided for employing those illegals.

So why don't I move from here?
Because I believe in staying at home and taking action to improve my community. I will not be like the cowards from the country south of ours.

In Oregon there are mountains, the ocean, deserts, lakes, rivers, and in the valley (where Salem is) we grow awesome pinot noir grapes! Actually, Salem is very close to our favorite coastal town, Depoe Bay.
Just know that when they say it's going to rain all week, they mean every minute of every day. But it keeps it beautiful here!

Just my $.02
