Anyone up for a Hatchalong?

Pics
i noticed the first rolling about 10 days ago, and the second a few days ago. I think that would be around Day 30-33, if I counted right.
Day 45 for the first egg is Feb 11
Day 45 for the second is Feb 21

I wonder how long into incubation it would be to hear the heartbeat with a stethoscope...

i may have to check a few of mine if I can keep the dogs quiet enough!.. seems like they think they need to be noisy every time I try to do something that requires silence.. lol

We tried, can't hear anything, even tried it with chicken eggs that I know are growing(and hatched), I guess it was because of the shell. I thought about taking it to moms work to ultra sound them, but I would have to transport them, so didn't want to do it. Might try it if they don't hatch, before we crack them open, hoping they hatch though.

Well tomorrow is the big day! I'm meeting the lady tomorrow at noon to pick up my emu eggs, as of yesterday she only had 4 but with 3 pairs & she already had 3 last Sunday, hopefully all 3 pairs lay another egg by tomorrow...oh my do I hope! I have 2 people waiting for them to hatch & buy them but if I have an extra female you can get her, I'll buy the shipping box to help out. I'm really thinking of getting another reptipro so I can incubate 18 eggs but if not I'm still doing 9 in my one. Hidden View Farm said they couldn't send eggs by anything other than the USPS but the gentleman in Maryland will ship FedEx/UPS overnight for me & so will another breeder, that's a relief since I'm going to have to have some shipped. For nursing school my awesome mom got me a state of the art stethoscope so I'm going to try listening for the heartbeat every weigh in.

What kind of scales do you all use? I got an "American Weigh Scale" aka AWS that's 1000g X 0.1 & it's pretty small but I put a nickel on it & it read 5g so it's accurate. I am beyond excited for tomorrow, please wish me luck that I'll get 3 more eggs by tomorrow so 7 total! :)

I would think a medical stethoscope would need a soft surface like skin to receive sound and wouldn't work on the hard round surface of an Emu egg.
A fetoscope might work though, those are used to listen to the heart beat of a fetus and have a soft funnel shaped head rather than the hard flat head of a modern stethoscope, unsurprisingly enough Amazon has fetoscopes for about $15.
I'd suspect ultrasound would have the same problem and you have to apply a conductive gel to the egg to try it which may clog the pores.
Thermal imaging cameras might be able to see where the chick is touching the shell, though they are extremely expensive.

The stethoscope I used was flat on one side and had the cone/funnel on the other. I saw that and thought it might work better than the flat one, but still nothing. We figured it wouldn't work, but we didn't have to buy anything, so we figured we try it. Someone at Mom's work suggested an Xray, but that most likey wouldn't work because of the shell showing up ike bone, and I wouldn't want to chance zapping a growing egg. That might be another thing we might try if one doesn't hatch, just to try it. I want to try it, but I would rather the eggs hatch.

Yeah, the fetoscope might be worth a try as it has a more specialized head, but I doubt it would be worth the money to try it if it doesn't work. An XRay would actually work, the shell would show up but you'd still be able to see the Emu inside it, course zapping a growing embryo with radiation can only be bad especially since these birds are fairly long lived.

Ok I was nuts and bid on 3 more Emu eggs and won them. Eggs 8, 9 & 10 arrived today and will go into the incubator Saturday.
