What is the cause of the bloody navel? I'm going around and making my final checklist of everything I need after the hatch such as feed, would betadine from my local pharmacy be alright or is there a different formula I should use? Ditto on the blood stop, what is recommended?
I'm not gonna be able to get any Ratite starter locally and ordering a bag online is bound to be murder so I'm looking to mix some Chicken layer pellets with some Rabbit pellets 50/50, the mix comes out looking like this compared to the Mazuri Ratite starter:

Was $20 for 100 pounds of combined feed but I'm wondering about the Protein and Salt, should these be raised? The Fiber is also 5% too high, will that be a problem or will providing grit prevent problems?
I can get some Chick starter crumble with 23% protein from the same place and mix it 3 ways that will raise the protein content to 18.67% but I don't remember the rest of the nutrition for the Chick starter but it'll probably lower the Fiber by a fair bit as well. Just wondering how this mix looks to the more experienced members of the forum here, there seems to be a lot of differing opinions out there on Emu diets.
bloody navels just seem to be when a chick kicks itself out of the shell before the navel has fully closed.. at least that's the only explanation I have ever seen for it..

For chick C:
I started him on chopped kale and collard greens on day 2.. he picked at it.. but didn't show much interest (still had plenty of yolk to live off of).. I also gave water on day 2 with vitamins in it (Save-a-Chick, Prime, or something similar would be ok).. I sprinkled a little chopped kale onto the surface of the water so the chick would peck at it

On day 3 I added some layer crumbles mixed in with some chick starter and a smidge of gamebird starter .. and mixed chopped kale and collards into that.. plus gave the vitamin water again (with kale on top). I know the gamebird starter is higher in protein.. but I only used a smidge to help with vitamins and minerals that I know are lacking in our local chick starter

today I am using the above and adding in some chopped apple and finely grated carrots

once he hits a week old I'll switch over to rabbit pellets and layer pellets with chopped veggies
I figured a varied diet would be better than just giving them the same old thing every day.. at least this way I can vary the protein and add in plenty of nutrients.. this week is mainly getting them to eat and drink and to help straighten out any vitamin/mineral deficiencies that they may have gotten from their mom

i know I am going to have to supplement with calcium when I get to next week since I have to cut back on our layer feed since it's 20% protein

lol.. I'm no expert on this.. just going by what I have read and adding in a bit of experimentation to see what works best.

The chick that hatched out yesterday seemed to have a harder time getting his legs under him than the first chick did.. so I taped them last night. This morning he is sitting upright and acting much better.. but i am still going to try to get some vitamins into him this morning .. I'm not sure if it was the 17% weight loss or if it was a little bit of a nutritional deficiency or if it was the sore navel.. but he did a little too much thrashing about as he tried to move than I would have liked to see..
either way I am going to try to help him out the best I can while his little bones are still pliable. if
I end up having to cull him later on.. then so be it.. But I refuse to resign myself to that if I can do something to change things.. like I said as of this morning he has shown a vast improvement.. so hopefully things continue to go that route

Congrats yinepu! Hopefully the bloody navel won't cause any problems...ok does anyone know if it's possible for an egg on day 26 to move? I got mine out to see if I could find the stinker & egg E started rolling. I moved it to several spots & after becoming steady it would roll, it did it 3 times. Also I couldn't find a smelly egg & the incubator isn't really smelling now...so who knows what's going on lol.

maybe you just have a really early bird?... The earliest I have seen mine move was day 31.. (they didn't roll.. more like wiggled on an axis)
there were a few times I THOUGHT I saw eggs move.. but it was just from vibrations as the dogs were roughhousing in the other room lol

That's a beautiful baby Yinepu! And what good posture.

Today marks the last hatch for the first batch of eggs set this season. 5 out of 6 shipped eggs hatched. I knew many weeks ago that #6 wasn't developing and took it out of the bator today after the last chick hatched out. Gave it to a friend to blow out (I believe it was not fertile or never developed due to shipping stress). I also completed the DNA cards and sent them off. I should be getting result back via email by the end of next week. As for our second batch of eggs, today marks day 42. I will be taking photos of each head, and many of them getting excersise on the fresh new green grass of Spring. All this green is makin' me feel Irish like. I've an idea! I'll buy me some Guinness and propose a toast to all the green this Spring.

Here's to the Green eggs that sat beneath mine watchful eye,
for near 50 days as the Sun journeyed across the Southern sky!
I've waited long and grown weary as Old Man Winter released his chilly grip,
then the hills turned new green and the big eggs began to Pip!
A whistlin' and a chirpin' the baby emus put on quite a show,
over the next year they'll grow fast and have nary a foe.
So I'll drink a pint of Guinness and thank my lucky stars,
that the emus think I'm mother and Spring is finally ours!

thanks!
I swear its the difference between night and day.. last night he was thrashing around so badly I was afraid he would hurt himself .. couldn't sit up at all and sounded like a herd of wild elephants in the bator.. after taping his legs he settled down and was calmer.. but he was still much different than the first baby that hatched.. and he still couldn't sit up at all.. his little beak was planted on the bottom of the bator and he looked so unhappy

This morning he is still a bit clumsy (as to be expected).. but he can sit upright.. which he wasn't able to do last night... he has also decided to peck at my fingers and sits up even straighter when he hears one of the dogs walking around.. so in all I'm glad I taped his legs as soon as I noticed he was having a few problems..

congrats on the amazing hatch rate!.. How many eggs are in batch #2?

Egg A has a chick with an attitude...

he's not due to hatch til Saturday.. this afternoon I found this:

the egg sounded yesterday... so in case anyone is wondering.. there's really no way of knowing how long it will be from an egg sounding to hatching.. lol.. I never even heard him peep til I picked up the egg after he had started to hatch...

Now the problem with this egg is that he's hatching from the BOTTOM of the egg...

When I place the egg on a flat surface the crack and missing piece of the shell is directly on the bottom .... so I had to turn the egg up a bit so he can hatch....

silly emu........

had egss that are 37 days old , no wiggles and no sign of life there,,,,,8 eggs

im kinda of anxious!!!... 4 more that where set on dav feb 14....ltr see/...
