I waited until the chick in my malpositioned egg was getting quieter and not as active before deciding to go in. She would also make this high pitched scream when I'd whistle to her after she didn't pip with the other one, could definitely tell she was in trouble just by the way she sounded.
She's doing so much better now, her neck is just about healed up to where she can sit up straight and she's up walking around, eating and drinking and just being a happy girl, she's not quite up to speed with the other one but she's getting there.

They're a riot together though, I vent sexed them both and the other one is a male, he's got a pretty good bulls eye and she's more striped too, but we'll see if I got it right when they get older. He likes to pick on her every now and then but he bent over in front of her while she was sitting up the other day and she caught him right in the forehead as if to say "How do you like it?" and he hasn't bothered her since.

Mine are 2days old,all 3 are together and starting to get up on their feet and make few steps at the time. I offered them some water and cut up some small pieces of spinach and put them on top of the water. They peck at it a bit.I will try to give them some food maybe tomorrow. When did yours started to eat?

I am having a difficult time getting mine to eat and drink. Any suggestions?

for the first day they won't eat anything.. if you have a chick that lost too much weight during incubation they will drink on day 1 if they can get steady enough.. on day 2 I offer water with vitamins in it.. to get them to drink I chop up some kale or collard greens and sprinkle a little on the water.. on day 3 I add some chopped greens (kale, collards and spinach) in a dish.. then later on I add chick starter crumbles mixed with layer crumbles and a smidge of game bird starter (I don't know if any one is specifically good for them.. just want a way to get some more nutrients and calcium plus a little protein in them). When I add the crumbles I mix it into their greens.. I also add some grated carrots and chopped up apples.. after they are a week old they get rabbit pellets mixed with layer pellets plus chopped greens

so for the first 3 days they don't eat much .. the yolk for an emu is pretty big.. so they can live off it for a couple of days.. i just like to get them interested in regular food ASAP.. and since they are pretty nosy and will peck at things they usually find the food soon enough

I'm going to start sending in the DNA samples this week.. haven't tried to vent sex mine yet

Just lead them over to the water bowl and poke the water with your finger till they copy you, same with the feed, if you just push your finger around in it they'll want to try it themselves. It's a trick I picked up while taking care of some catnapped Mourning Doves, the 'experts' at a local aviary suggested I use a spoon and shovel feed into their mouths.

That's his favorite spot up in the corner, she usually sleeps up in the bed. The world ends if she's already there though, looks something like "Heeeey, that's MY spot!" right before he climbs over her and squeezes himself up in front.

Holy, cow! Power outage!

He's just fine, though. when i got to him he was so cold and just complaining up a storm, but a little time inside my jacket and he is just fine now.

He has nice straight legs, is eating and drinking great, and is very active! All is well.

Has anyone tried using an Uninterruptible Power Supply before? I have one for my workshop computer but I didn't think to use it for my incubator until a few days ago, they're used for computers and are basically a big rechargeable battery that provides backup power for when the power goes out in the house or if the breakers trip, supposed to give you enough time to save your computer work and shut down before loosing power, but for an incubator it'd probably last through a blackout.

Might come in handy for future incubations, wasn't there someone who had a power outage that took some eggs?

that's one reason i use heat sinks.. helps keep everything warm longer if the power goes out
