I'm thinking about getting some buckeyes as dual-purpose birds...for ranging to keep my grasshoppers down, for eggs to eat and to sell to friends and as meaties--but I'm not sure what they'd be like for eating? Let's say I hatched out 12 of them and 6 were roos. I would keep all of the hens and eat 5 of the roos...

Just curious on the finished age/weight/carcass on a Buckeye cockerel or roo?

If you get the right strain, Buckeyes can be very meaty birds. I would look to get them from a reputable breeder, as hatchery stock is usually geared more towards egg laying. I have a roo from breeder stock that weighs in at almost 12 pounds. He's an impressive specimen.

Thanks. Hatchery birds aren't allowed here anyway! LOL
