Anyone use Koop Clean?

Oh boy! exactly what mine are doing. I am changing the koop clean in my brooder every two days and when I replace it, all I have to do is drop hand fulls of it and they will spread it right away. No, they won't stop playing with it, I am in my fourth week and yes, I have to replace the water and clean feeders three times a day. I have 16 one month old chicks. Don't forget to give them chick grit because they are eating the hay and even though there is some PDZ in koop clean, I believe grit is better.
Look at it this way, scratching the bedding keeps them entertained so they won't fight too much.

Good luck with your chicks....

I'm glad I'm not the only one with over excited chicks to have Koop clean! They calmed down a little. They are almost one month old too! Quick question. I have sand in the brooder because they love to take dust baths in it and pick at it. Is that sufficient instead of grit? I did have grit in the brooder but they never touched it. (I also feed them mealworms and take them outside)

I think your chicks will be fine if you are taking them outside and you have sand in their dirt box. I am giving mine some grass from the place where they will be roaming in few days, just to get their immunity going.

I tried a few times to put a grass patch in the brooder and the chicks were always scared if it and would go near it, so after 24 hours I took it out! Lol.

Is it ok to put Koop clean in with brand new chicks that just hatch? (Once they are removed from the incubator?)

No, you need to use paper towels for few days until they learn how food is and tastes like otherwise they would be eating little pieces of hay. Once they learn to eat the feed then you can change the bedding.

This past spring I switched over to sand in my coop...BIG MISTAKE! I have heard others who use sand in the coop with great success but this was not the case for me. Maybe I didn't have the sand thick enough or I have too many chickens (some of this is true, chicken math) but the odor was terrible and the cleanup was a pain, every few days I was having to rake up the sand and sift through...Ugh. I had used Koop Clean last year and through the winter with little problems and virtually no odor, I don't know why I wanted to switch to sand except I thought it would work better and be less expensive! Wrong! I decided to go back to Koop Clean! So yesterday on the hottest day of the year I shoveled all of the sand out of the coop! I couldn't take the smell and mess one more day!

Here is my coop after the sand had been shoveled away and swept!

And after I added the Koop Clean back!

My hens were thrilled, seems they prefer the Koop Clean too! This morning I went out to the coop and for the first time this summer was not hit with a horrible odor!

Everyone is happy! :)

I bought two bags yesterday and I am already impressed. I cleaned the pine shavings out of my 8x8 coop and was shocked at how much dust was left on the floor. I opened the first bag of KC and it smelled so good! I was shocked at how much one bag covered! The 2nd bag is still in my car! The girls were "afraid" of it last night but this morning they were scratching through it and clucking away. They didn't scratch in the pine shavings so the muck was not turned over unless I did it. I have poop boards with PDZ so we stay pretty clean but I like the idea that they will till this bedding themselves! My question is this.....since I have the 2nd bag I can A: store it for the next clean-out B: take it back and get my $17 back or C: put it in my outdoor run. Does anyone have any experience with using this in their outdoor run? Mine is partially covered and is all dirt with the exception of a sand box for dusting. Was curious if it would work to keep mud away. My girls often have muddy feet that they like to clean in a pan that they then want to drink from! What do you guys think?

Store that second bag cuz you'll use it eventually! Did you put it in the nesting boxes? I have a covered run but I do not use the Koop Clean there, just too pricey for that I think. Some does get scratched out of the coop into the run which is fine. But I too love Koop Clean!
