Anyone Use 'Oxine' to clean with?

I was reading a chicken article today about keeping the coop and everything concerning the chickens clean. The person who wrote the article recommended 'Oxine', even over bleach. I really do not want to use bleach because it is a carcinogen, and some of the other recommended products used for cleaning contain harmful ingredients. I would like to know more about Oxine and if anyone has experience with using this cleaner. What do you all recommend to keep things clean in the coop?

It depends on what you are wanting to do. If you wanting possibly clean after you have had disease, then Oxine may be the way to go.

For general cleaning, soap and water or using a vinegar solution should be sufficient. I know there are TONS of articles, blogs and opinions out there. Use something that you are comfortable with.

I prefer using a vinegar based solution, I have made the Orange Vinegar that Terry Golson of the HenCam has on her common sense chicken keeping blog. It does a good job and smells nice. I don't worry about what's in it.

The main things to do is keep your coop cleaned out of droppings, bedding dry and good air circulation (ventilation). Keep your water stations clean (the best you can - mine love to dust bathe next to theirs, so it seems I'm always washing dirt out and off of it

- it depends on how wild they are, sometimes mine needs a good rinse a couple of times a day!)

I do "dust" my coop a few times a year, but usually I will shop vac the walls - be sure to wear a mask when stirring up dust.

Thanks for your information. I was wondering about using vinegar as well. The article about Oxine ironically was written by Kathy Shea Mormino. I'll have to look at the article she wrote on using vinegar.

I've used non-activated Oxine, properly diluted, to disinfect various parts of my chicken coop, feeders, waterers, and other equipment, as well as in a disinfecting footbath. It is a relatively safe chemical and can even be misted (well-diluted) onto birds to help with respiratory infections. My only caution is that it can bleach clothes, so be careful not to wear great clothes when you're using Oxine. For everyday cleaning, though, I just use vinegar or plain soap and water.
