Anyone want to guess when my three girls will lay?

And we have an egg! 9 days after the first squatting. So exciting!

The eggs will probably look a little different for each hen, so look for subtle differences in egg size, shape and color.  That may help to determine who's laying what.

Only one is laying, both eggs were identical. She was in the nest box this morning for a half hour by herself so I now know she's the first one to start laying, even though she showed no signs!

I have a barred rock pullet who threw me like that. She didn't squat and is very skittish, so I was only able to determine she was actually laying when I found her in the nest box. Go figure!

Don't discredit your BSL just yet. Just before they get ready to start laying, they'll all take a sudden interest in the nest. They'll scratch around, nestle down, take some bedding in their beaks and cover their backs with it, etc They'll take their time getting familiar with the nests before they actually begin laying. If you leave eggs (real or artificial) in the nest, even if they're from another girl, they'll take a rather confused interest in them. Your BSL could be laying and the one you saw in there today could just be getting to the point where she's becoming interested.

Also, not all will squat. Only my oldest two hens will squat; they do it for me and my young children but not the rooster (they completely ignore him actually). The younger girls, even though they're laying won't squat for anyone and one of them has a rosy pink comb instead of bright red but she was the first of my new pullets from last spring to begin laying. It is very possible that you have two laying now or that your rosy combed girl is the one and only but the only way to tell for sure is to catch them in the act.
