Anyone want to hatch with me? - Went in 01/16/14.

my avatar is one of my roosters I'm hoping that he is daddy to more than one of the chicks. Also we candled today and it looks like there is blobs and 10 of 11 eggs. We did see veins in a couple of the lighter ones so real happy here.

Well, I guess my question about days until hatching for bantamized LF vs true bantam breeds is answered. My true bantam breeds have always hatched at 19 days. Yesterday was 19 days for my bantam blue salmon Faverolles eggs and no pips yet. Guess they will hatch at 21 days like LF.

on a horrible note...

...we had a fire in our garage last night and I lost all of my older chicks...bantam Cochins. Looking for some eggs to hopefully replace them with as bantam Cochins were going to be my 2nd breed of bantams.

Oh my goodness I am so sorry to hear that

Well he is so handsome.
Is he Wyandotte x Naked neck??
Congratulations!!

Bad news
All 24 eggs from my friends barn yard mix are not fertile. I cracked two that were not fertilized to double check. Her roo is just not up for the job. He is old.

Today we put in the 12 Marans eggs and 2 silkie/mix? eggs we bought yesterday along with 13 more eggs of our own barn yard mix.

We still also have 12 of our own barn yard eggs that have been in for a week.

DS 24 ate two eggs that had been in the incubator for a week but where not fertile. Is it OK to eat those?

It feels anticlimactic to have that many infertile eggs. If I would have know I could have given my friend one of my roos. Oh well.

Poo, but at least you have others going!

I don't think the egg will hurt him, the worst part would have been the gross out factor if they had been fertile. Some cultures eat nearly fully formed duck embryos and fermented eggs, his week old incubated nonfertile egg seems pretty tame compared to that...

Wow, that's gross. Lol, sorry.

I checked my eggs again. I tossed two that were clear/early quitters. That leaves 4 going strong, they were all really active and I swear I heard one peep. Is that even possible??? Lol I cant wait to have little fuzzies running around again.

And I went and got some duck eggs. I'll be warming up my coolerbator in the morning. :)

ESofVA- Sorry to hear about the garage fire and aweful on losing your chicks. I would send you hatching eggs (as I am in VA too) but I have no bantam cochins. My only bantam breed are the Black Tailed White Japs and they are not laying yet!

I candled eggs again last night, they are on days 10,11,12 as they went in staggered. I have 9 definite movers and had 7 that I knew were duds or "thought" were duds. I am going to do the float test mentioned and see if I can save any of them. I cracked one of the 7 and was a definite no- only a blood ring visible on candling and thats all that was there when opened.

I built a coolerbator and I am waiting to finish it and get it warmed to test the thermostat cut on/off for a while before I set my second set of eggs to hatch! And they are all going to go in at the same time this time!

Hope everyone else is having a great hatch!

BTW- I can't imaging scrambling up that unfertilized egg that has been in the incubator---Can't imagine that there is anything wrong with it, but I just don't think I could do it myself!

A peep? What day are you on? I say anything is possible!

Today around 4pm will be day 16 for my 4. I think one of the 4 is a quitter from complications of the fall that the incubator took last week, but I can't quite tell. If I don't notice definite growth by lockdown, I will perform the float test and discard if it shows it as a dud. Does anyone know if all quitters develop a blood ring or does that only happen with the early quitters? The other 3 are doing well from what I can tell, even the one that had cracked. I decided to go with the candle wax to better protect the eggshell, plus, after some research, it seems like it will be easy for the chick to pip and zip with candle wax as opposed to duct tape. I do understand that I face the chance that bacteria might cause implications on the chick-to-be and that I may have to cull it, but as of now, I'm not going to give up on it if it's not giving up on itself. I guess I still have a lot of hope.

They are around day 14. I think it was just my over excited imagination. Blood rings only form if the embryo dies in the first week, before any tissue develops. If it doesn't look right compared to the others by lockdown I'd probably toss it. I also think that candle wax is a much better choice than duct tape. I think the fibers in the tape would be more likely to harbor bacteria. I think that if the chick has survived this much, she's gonna be a tough little fuzz but in no time!
