Anyone want to hatch with me? - Went in 01/16/14.

Sorry I haven't updated in a while, we got a new puppy a few days ago so I've been super busy!

My 7 Silkie eggs are still moving right along as expected. Tonight they go into lock down and hopefully I'll have some adorable chick pictures to post by Sunday or Monday. On a sadder note, my beautiful blue hen was killed by a hawk today. Of course she was my favorite. I'm double glad I collected that extra batch of eggs for the incubator now. It just won't be the same without her :(

I hope everyone else is doing okay!

PUPPY!!!!!!!!! Congratulations

So sorry about your hen :( . I had to put all of my free range chickens... not that there are that many...in their pens all of the time and bird net over the top. The hawks are so bold they will take them right in front of you. Lots of Bald Eagles here too and I know people that have lost chickens to them. I had a hawk take a young pullet 15 feet from me and fly off with it. I could hear her screaming all of the way across the pasture and into the woods. After that I just couldn't take it an. She was a beautiful white frizzle that I was keeping.

WOO HOO! That's great to hear!

My 4 little eggs are going into lockdown at 4pm this afternoon! I'm getting nervous and am a little worried and starting to have doubts about the whole thing. The last couple of times that I candled the eggs, I can't tell what is going on, and I feel like they are too little and not filling up enough of the egg. It's OK if they decide to hatch a little late, especially with that fall the eggs took last week. What if they all died? I know it's common to not see much movement in the last few days, but I guess I am just overreacting about it. It is my first hatch and it's been a rough ride for me.

I've float tested the 3 that could be float tested (one can't because of the crack in the shell) a few days ago. I don't know what to look for and I can't find any pictures to help me decide. They didn't float to the top, and they aren't exactly sitting on the bottom. They all had the pointed ends barely touching the bottom of the bowl and the big ends were straight up, as if they were sitting in a carton, big ends up.

Who can console this woman gone completely insane?

I am sure I will be like that when it comes to lockdown. I am a bit worried about the oxygen levels when it comes to lock down and the humidity in our coolerbator.

Wow! I didn't even think about the oxygen level, but mine is a 10 gallon aquarium, so it's not air tight at all. In fact, I'd probably be more concerned about keeping the humidity in than I would be concerned about o2! If all else fails, you could poke a hole in the coolerbator? Or maybe not, All I know is that hatching chicken eggs shouldn't be too much like rocket science, and I feel like there is probably leeway in it since I'm sure a hen wouldn't have it set to anything particular. Just what she can provide out in nature.. RIght?

Can I join. I have a first Time broody sitting on 8 backyard mutts eggs.
Set Jan 20 due to hatch Feb 10.
Also 9 eggs set in bator today again also back yard mutts
Welcome aboard! How is the weather where you are at? I have a hen that is showing signs of broodiness, but with the cold weather, I don't want to let her sit on any just yet.
