I can imagine! It really is a sickness..they like NEED to hold on to the stuff..for whatever reason...
Usually some loss or trauma happend to them..i think....So by having all their "stuff" they feel safe with it...its security to them...

Yeah...grandma was a young girl during the depression...it had an impact.

Aww..that was a tough time to live through...

They say that does have an impact on people... extreme struggles. remember how some folks that lived through the depression would hide money throughout their house, rather than use a bank...& folks that went hungry would hoard food... and so on...

Just turned it on. I watch another one that is just called Hoarders. It is on another channel, I think.

I sometimes wonder if my husband would be like this if I wasn't around.

I know someone like that as well. Piles of stuff from floor to ceiling. Canned food, old clothes, boxes and boxes of STUFF! Looks like someone tried to cram all the world's thrift shops into one house! There are only narrow pathways through the junk and only one small room is lived in, the rest is storage! She's seeing a psychiatrist and they are trying to remove a lot of the clutter but it's going to take a lot of work. She gets really flustered if she knows anyone is coming to clean. It really is a sickness. Here's hoping for the best!

My youngest step DD did that for a long time! Usually bologna...

Grandma hoards everything from foam take out plates to gallon milk jugs, dishes, dolls, LOTS of toys...kinda weird, but it's because they didn't have those things.

My almost 11 year old son would be a horder if i didn't constantly throw out the thing he brings home,in two days you can barely walk in his room as it's always trashed!(he has ocd)

I think my mom has a hoarding problem, she has more of a shopping obsession, but she has both.
My sis helped mom clean up for Christmas last fall and she reported that mom had an entire hallway filled with bags and packages of clothes bought at stores, still wrapped up, not being used or worn.
Mom buys this stuff and then doesn't even use it, and she has always been a total organization failure . . . . I'm starting to worry about her, but I really don't know what to do.
What I do not understand is what my mom seems to get out of buying stuff??? I don't understand shopoholics, I'm too practical for that.
It has only gotten worse since she got a bigger house and a job (when I was little she stayed at home)

Her dad (who lived in the depression) sortof has the same problem, but at least I can see where he is coming from. He will buy tons of something like BBQ sauce, or cake mix, or cases of canned veggies --- for the simple fact that they are on sale this week --- then he never uses them. At least I can see this stemming from growing up during the depression. I think I understand why he does it.

Yup..back then you did NOT throw away stuff ... you cherished everything. You could always use it for "something"....
