We are joining your thread too: We have a source for fertile eggs of show quality and some rare breeds. We had some given to us and ended up with more than what would fit in our incubator so we borrowed one. Batch one was set on the 28th of Sept. and Batch 2 was set on 29th of Sept.
We have eggs from Black Sumatra, Silver Phoenix, White Silkie, BBR Araucana and Black/Blue Cochin.
We originally set 66 eggs and after candling twice we are down to 53 eggs. 13 of them were not fertile.
Our daughter wanted to set eggs from her Blue Cochin hen and pullet. Her Black Cochin cockerel had started doing his thing before we separated him away from the ladies as to not damage their feathers (show birds). She set eggs back to put in the incubator and all of them were fertile and are still alive! This will be a start to her Blue Cochin BloodLine.
We are hoping that the Araucana eggs will all survive but knowing the odds with the lethel gene we just hope we get one with good tuffs! We already have 1 cockerel with awesome tuffs and 1 pullet with a good tuff on one side and 1 pullet who is clean faced and 1 cockerel who is clean faced. Se we are hoping for more double tuffed birds.
We need a roo to go with our white Silkie: Puff Ball. We hope for 1 roo and the rest be pullets but you just never know what you will get. We have sold all of our bantam breeds except for this one and are hoping to raise White Silkies.
Eggs should start hatching on Wednesday of next week. My husband did not plan this very well since our State Fair Poultry Show is the later part of next week and our daughter has 19 birds entered in it.
We have had as many as 8 brooder boxes in our house from Jan - at least May of this year due to the cold weather and then no space in the chicken coops but now we are able to put them in an outside room that will stay plenty warm for them. No more dust all over my house from brooder boxes (got in our A/C unit and the filter on Frig and literately everywhere in the house).
Would like to get a good amount of chicks but do not need 53 chicks!!!!
My husband gets addicted to setting eggs and goes crazy!!!! Then I get weak because they are so cute!!!
Good Luck Everyone on Hatch Day!!!
