anyone with knowledge with preemie baby supplies (24 week gestation)

When my son was a 29 weeker preemie in 2006 I found the best clothing for him, once he was *allowed* to wear it in the hospital, were some baby gowns that could also snap into a sleeper. My mom bought them at Walmart. The gowns are easier to allow for the tubes, leads, etc. The brand was Child of Mine or something like that that is a division of Carters. It wasn't really practical to put anything on him until he was a little bigger and could leave the incubator/warmer. They don't like to disturb them much. I don't think I could dress Parker until he was a few weeks old. My son is now 5 and a normal (wild) boy

Best wishes for your friend and her baby.

I am a nurse too and I thought it was weird too that she was asking for soothers and clothing with openings for leads... but apparently this was on the OK'd list

Maybe its what the parents of the baby wants? or maybe the OP asking for things doesn't know what the baby can or cant have while in the ICU.. I dunno, i gave the info i know and search for link for her, its up to her if she wants it or not.. Some people dont listen to others.. some do... i just hope the baby is going better..

First off, as a mom of a preemie,>27weeker< my hearts go out to this family. It's a long and rough road, even as they grow older.

Secondly, have the family contact the "March of Dimes" to see if they have a chapter in that area, and if they do..they can offer some help. Even if the hospital can get preemie diapers, they are going to be really big on the baby for a good while. I'm not familliar with that country, but if they have a walmart ...they tend to carry a good deal of preemie clothing. If not, babies r us >as already mentioned< carries them, I got some stuff from this site http://www.preemiestore.com/Micro-1-4-lbs_c_3.html.

I would have your friend check to see if they are going to allow the baby to be in clothes before spending the money on preemie sizes. As mentioned, they dont normally want them in clothing to interfere in monitors or in case something happens they need to access the baby quickly. Otherwise, just do a websearch for preemie clothes or preemie supplies and you'll find a ton. Many offer free shipping. For diapers, contact "pampers" and "huggies" directly, tell them the situation and i bet they'll send a package or 2 preemie sized diapers out to them.

Here's the link to the March of Dimes, contact them and see what they have available for that area if none, perhaps they have ties with someone who can help

Best of luck to the family and the wee one.

I guess it's different in different hospitals. My daughter came home at 3lb 5oz at 5 weeks of age. We were told once she could hold her temps she could go home..ohh and after she stopped having so many b's and a's and could nipple at least 70% of her feeds.

My son was born at 22 weeks and was 1lb 9 ounces. He is now almost 10yrs old. Anyway, we bought cabbage patch kid clothes and cut holes where the leads needed to be. Our son was in the ICU for the first 9 months. We were allowed to dress him once the lines and IVs were minimal. Not sure if the current Cabbage Patch kids clothes are made from real cloth or not anymore. Something to check. March of Dimes is a good resource. They helped us a lot.

WOW 22 weeks?! truely a miracle baby. My son tried to come at 22 weeks and I was put on bedrest because we were told he wouldnt be "viable" untill 24 weeks. He ended up hanging on till 38 weeks when he was taken by c-section. Congrats to you and your son!

lol I am the OP and also a nurse... (I work with end of life care though I know squat on preemies) I asked mom and she said the hospital gave her a list of ok'd things.. and a soother and clothes were on that list... I assume its for when babe comes off vent but they told her to start looking now cause these things are hard to come by.

I was one of those premies that weigh that much.....look at me now LOL! Amazing wonders of technology! Back then, they didn't have much hope for me, either I make it or I don't. My grandparents had a burial plot for me ready if it needs to be.

I am sure most hospitals that I know of would not dress a baby at that age but I guess the mom had the OK to use it. They are very very tiny and very fragile at that age. Microdiapers are hard to come by.

It is great if one can sew some clothes for the infant. It can go a long ways!

I've been a NICU nurse in one of the largest nursery systems in the US for 25 years. This little guy will most likely go home around his due date if he manages to have few complications and will be on the small newborn size. The hospital will have tiny binkies and such for when he is small. Most moms with preemies will tell you that they received TOO MANY tiny baby things, mostly because it is so fun to buy miniature clothes, so buy for next year when he is bigger and she will have run out of newborn gifts!
