Mechanical pencils are different. I'm talking about those crappy standard pencils used in schools.
All pencils have their uses, but in Bants case, the HB was holding her back.

Mechanical pencils HB do seem and feel different than the standard HB pencil.

I use it for base shading.... I like how it doesn't smear out of place, unlike the B. I have a problem with draggin my hand across the paper....

Bic all the way. Their lead doesn't break so easy.
They come in three sizes.
0.5, 0.7, 0.9 mm

That's nonsense. I do all my drawing with mechanical pencils which is HB.

The only difference between the pencils is the thickness of lead.
