You always have to be concerned about disease transmission. Never let wild birds nest around or in your coops or go in and eat their feed so don't hang feeders for wild birds anywhere near the coop, if at all.

The key thing that we learned about our 12 is that they grow RIDICULOUSLY fast, from tiny fluffs that fit into one hand to 1.5lb chickens that are crowing and clucking at just 8 weeks old, they are so big that it takes every bit of both of your hands to hold one. Ours were in their 3rd house at not quite 4 weeks old (#1 a BIG plastic tub ~3ft x 18", #2 a little tikes playhouse 3'x4' and #3 6'x4' coop with 4'x8' run). I would guess that they are probably 12x their original size or more.

So start building your coop ASAP, because you'll need it.

One thing that made life easier for us is to put newspaper in the bottom of the brooder, then put your pine shavings on top of it, when it is time to change their bedding (everyday or every other day) just roll up the newspaper with the shavings in it.

Wish I had helpful input..when we were given ours...we played with them everyday took them outside everyday..but we limited everything remembering that they were tiny babies...They loved to sit with me snuggled in a towel and be kept warm...we used a work light..because we were not prepared as I came home one night to a box of chickens...thanks to my friends..I am in way deep with the cuties now!
