AOV in bantam cochins??

I know, I could probably look this up.....but I'd rather ask you guys!

In araucanas, you can show birds of a non-standard color in the "AOV" class (Any Other Variety).

Can you do the same thing in bantam cochins? Can you do the same in other breeds? Or is it specific to araucanas?

I'm thinking that I might like to show my mille fleur kids -- but, of course, that's not APA accepted.

Any info welcome!

Wellll....I show splash rosecombs and they are not in the APA, but they are in the ABA. I think you would be ok as long as it is a recognized color. After all, how do you think they get new colors within a breed recognized

If enough people start to show that color then the APA or ABA may admit it and recognize it as a standard color for the specific breed.

It would be a DQ now as it is not a recognized color for cochins in the APA nor the ABA. I believe there are several breeders working toward that direction...a few of them poultry judges and gents on the cochin committee.

I would probably show them anyway. Many people would love to see them and the judges can get accustomed to them.

There was a Mille Cochin at the Lebanon show last year so I think you can.

You can show them But the best they could place would be Best of Variety since they're not an admitted variety. You would enter them as Mille Fleur not AOV. AOV is a classification used at fairs to cover any recognizable variety not listed in the premium book.
It absolutely would not be diqualified. People show non-recognized breeds/ varieties all the time. It's how you build interest in a breed or variety.
There is a process for admitting new breeds/varieties. It's a bit more involved than simply a lot of people showing it.

Araucana folks use AOV all the time -- but I don't know about in other breeds. And yup, I'm in the Marans club so I'm getting quite an exposure to the machinery involved in getting a breed APA recognized!
