Apartment Coop

Great to know! I could put the plants outside of the run and maybe only put them in during certain times of the day? Would that work?
I have seen people grow trays of grass for them, tray's like they use to grow and sell ground cover in at the nusery, and then rotate them out as they get worn.

My bantams are pretty quiet birds, I have Golden Sebright's and Welsummer bantams. Well, they are quiet except for the one hen who has decided to crow! She crows every morning and she's quite good at it! She is a proven hen, lays eggs, and I have never heard her make a sound after laying. So if not for my little oddball who decided to crow, my bantams would be pretty quiet birds.

yeah...I don't think this will work..if you are allowed to have them then have them, but if you aren't then don't. Chickens need to be able to get out and walk around...Why not get a parakeet or something similar that you can keep in a cage and that is a usual pet by apartment standards.

I've heard people in NY and Chicago having bantams in their balony and upper floors just like they do for pigeons which it is perfectly LEGAL to have pigeons.

A couple of Serama pullets might fit the bill, they are not much bigger than the macaws. Bantam Orpingtons are quiet, I know mine is quiet for most part unless she got some chicks under her, she is like a Mrs Dobermann LOL! I live in the city but not in apartment. All you can do is TRY but just be informed you are at the risk under your landlord or apartment manager that has the last say so.....Seramas qualify as house pets LOL!

Do your research and then go in the direction you want to take. A very large parrot/ferret cage, I mean the huge rolling cage thing would suffice. I've seen people having those for their Seramas and they did quite well. To have them running around the apartment, you would need diapers LOL!

Good luck and have fun!

do you guys have any other suggestions on birds to raise? i want something egg producing, i know quails make pretty good eggs, small but good. and they have a more normal sound than a chicken...what i want is something i can eat for meat and i can eat their eggs. suggestions would be awesome.

In this case cortunix or jumbo cortunix quail would be perfect. They are nice and meaty and lay plenty eggs too. If you get a cheap little gqf incubator, they are super easy to hatch. Its easier to ship the eggs than buying them. Usually for quail the minimum order is 35 to 50. Prob. too many for you.

Well, I have been persuaded to raise 2 or 3 quails instead of chickens. Being as I know nothing about chickens. Not quails but I figure that it is a good starting point. My questions are what do they eat and where to get it. What type of cage and how big. Are the males loud and annoying like roosters? Thanks

Quails can eat chicken food. The size of the cage depends on if you plan to let them out to get excersize. Both males and female quail make noise but it's not too bad. I kept my coturnix in the house and it was fine. The eggs were very tasty too! We didn't eat ours but enjoyed the eggs and having the quail. Very easy to take care of. Good luck!

have a plan B. that is when the apt. management finds out what are u going to do with the birds. if u know somebody with birds ask if they will take them if it comes to that
