Appalachian Trail / Hiking

My brother is going to hike the appalachian trail for a week. Has any one hear gone and hiked on the appalachian trail. please share your stories if you have i'd love to hear them.

Thats also right now I am reading "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson and i have to say some parts of it are

When's he going? And which part? The AT goes through several states. If he's going soon he'd best take plenty of layers and a warm sleeping bag!

Dh and Ds camped in W Va, along Greenbriar (think thats the name) River. they said it was beautiful. I'll get ds to post some stories later, if thats the area you'll be in.

I hiked a portion of that trail back in 1978. We started in NY State and hiked for three days and I forget how many miles, but we were so sick of packaged trail food that we got off the trail and hitched a ride to the nearest tavern for burgers and beer.

We had alot of fun, and met some nice people. I would love to do it again.

My brother is going this saturday to VA up through MD and to the begining of PA. He will be gone for seven days will a buddy that wanted to go with him as well. It will be cool espcially the first couple of days its suposed to rain. But it sounds so fun and i am jelous that i don't get to go.

I've read that parts of the trail usually through mountainous areas can be pretty rugged and some areas aren't very well-maintained. Most people starting in the Spring start on the southern end and work their way north. If your brother is an experienced hiker I'm sure he will know how to dress appropriately. If not, he should probably do some research on the subject.

my brother is an experienced camper/hiker he also does civil war reanactments so hes used to the hardships of hiking

I live right on the App trail! We go trail riding on it all the time. Some parts are more exciting than others.

Tell your brother to take lots of pictures, especially during the Spring! What part is he planning to hike?

When he gets to "Round Top" and the 500 steps in pa tell him to wave down at me
