Appalachian Trail / Hiking

That sounds like such fun! I want to go! I want to go!
My DH and I thru-hiked the trail many years ago. Began by myself on 3/10 on a cold rainy day, wondering what the heck I was doing this for. I left on my own, but by the time I got to the first shelter, it was so crowded, I had to throw a tent. But, met so many great people, it was really quite an experience. So many places to want to visit again.
It took me about 6 months (GA-ME) and DH 4 months (he started in May). We first ran into each other in Front Royal, VA--which I didn't remember. lol It's a long story, but we ended up getting married on the trail, the next year, at the Blackburn Trail Center, near Harpers Ferry. Then we were caretakers there for a year. Did lots of trail work, met lots of nice hikers, families, scouting groups, conservation groups and of course PATC members.

Wish your brother good luck and have fun. Enjoy the views!

Yes! Never intended for that to happen, and I did my level best to remain a lone hiker. Didn't actually meet him (as I remember him until just before Great Barrington, CT--when he zoomed past again. By the time I got to New England, I was hiking in and out of a group of 7. By the time we reached ME, he was done and came back and helped us slackpack. (slackpacking is where all you carry is water and food, and essential for the day--no heavy pack, etc.) So we slacked thru much of ME, except the 100mi wilderness, where there were no roads. He would meet us at a trail head, drive us to town, to the PO, shopping, and take us back to the trail. So we didn't have to hitch into town. Luckily he helped us, as we finally arrived at Katahdin on Oct 16. Two days later they closed the mountain due to snow. It would have been tragic to have spent 6 months hiking only to find you couldn't finish the thruhike because Katahdin was closed. Luckily, 6 of us finished that day. Unfortunately, one of my best buddies didn't make it to the top in time (as he wanted his wife to accompany him, and she couldn't make it).
That year, there were several behind us that probably didn't make it either--due to the mt. being closed.
