Had to lock the birds up due to a raccoon wandering around the neighborhood. Well I posted a picture of our birds in a chicken group on facebook and almost all the comments were 'Why are they locked up?! They should be running around free' and 'You're really terrible for keeping them locked up'

I'm thankful that a mod of the group commented 'Maybe there's a predator in the area'
I replied to their comment to confirm this but I'm still a little hurt that people thought I was terrible for keeping them locked up. I had even wrote at the top of the post that they're locked up to keep them safe for a couple days.

Just ignore them! Mine are permanently up for the winter until spring/summer because hawk are horrible in my area this time of year.

It's amazing how many people think causing some temporary discomfort is worse than them being killed in a gruesome way.
Ghouls.
I would have been petty and commented how "being shut in for a day is better than them having their wee little heads ripped off and their innards pulled out their butts while still alive, it's nice to see you have a firm grasp on what's really important, I'll keep them outside next time a predator is lurking, I'm sure they'll love not being in their nice, secure house. Go pound sand."

Oh good grief! What is WRONG with people?? Why do so many folks jump in to judge someone - and more importantly, throw out their unwanted criticism about a situation they aren't even involved with? You're keeping your chooks safe. You love them. Do NOT let what other people post from the anonymous vantage point of their computers make you feel bad. Amazingly enough, lots of folks who keep chickens keep them in their coop/run all the time. Not everyone can free range their birds. And from what I've read from these "horrible" folks, their chickens are doing just fine. Hugs to you for doing what's right, caring for your chickens' safety, and please, don't let this make you feel bad. :hugs

I would gather that these people think they are experts on raising chickens - and many of them are indeed experienced.....but they are so quick to want to "share their wisdom" that they fail to read what the situation is all about....sad, but that sort of type exists in many different social situations.....try to let it go - such an opinion is not worth much, to my mind....nor are they going to change their ways.....such comments, when they issue them, feed their ego far too well....
