Apparently they want straw in their nest boxes.

Mine prefer chopped straw, but they've recently taken to shredded aspen. I found it in the hamster area in the pet section at the local Walmart. It's easy for the chickens to mold into shape and keeps said shape very well.

My broody--decorated herself --EVERY time she came off the nest..She would return full of grass/leaves and hay.....

Almost all of my hens spend time picking up nesting material and decorating themselves while they sit in the nest boxes. They come out of there looking like they've been rolling around on the ground.
