Appenzeller Spitzhauben anyone?

After the discussions on Spitzhauben birds with Leukosis in the US, can anyone clear up who has it and who doesn't? I'd like to be sure the Spitz I add to my flock aren't LLV positive, and I'm concerned many in US are.

Those of you who have them, what can you share about your flocks and the flocks you know about?

Oh! It's a real name! I thought it was supposed to be a tongue twister!! Oh, well!

It is very difficult to find negative LLV birds since the original importation started off with it. Spitzhaubens are not the only breed that has it but a few certain lines of Ameraucans have it as well as some lines of Orps. Either they are carriers for life or die from it. What is boils down is needing NEW blood and lots of them LOL!

I had no idea about this disease until I posted here! Makes me want to reconsider getting this breed. They look and sound great but I don't plan on breeding them and don't want to endanger my other birds!

LLV can be genetic.....so Spitzhaubens have them and not all birds get them. I have Welsummers and they have NO signs of LLV. If you want to make sure, just have them tested. Other than that, it would be just as good as Merck's, chances are there regardless. So they are either carriers or die from it. Better be carriers than die from it. For Ideal, I have not had my hen tested but the other one, I'd rather not mention, tested positive for LLV. She was gone (to a pet home) and as of to this date she is fine and if she passed her first year, then she would be a carrier.

Allenwranch can explain more about it because of her birds, most of them are tested positive for LLV and she was sick over it. So it is up to us to hope for the best to find a cure. just like MD in humans, either you have the deadly gene or not but you are at risk as a carrier.
